I have a friend who is not a member of VJ . She asked if someone here in the USA has experienced receiving unemployment benefits from the Employment Security Commission. She wants to know whether or not if will affect her uplifting conditions . She is holding as of now a 2-year green card and it will be renewed next year as a 10 yr green card.

She did not intend to receive unemployment benefits. She just went to the ESC to find some job links after she lost her job. She was interviewed and received some website links for local jobs . She found out that she is eligible to receive unemployment benefits for a few weeks while she looked for a new job. Now , due to recent federal legislation, she is also receiving 25 dollars each week from the federal government because she is receiving qualified unemployment benefits

I was just on unemployment for four months and a half months, so I'm pretty familiar with it. Unemployment is generally considered insurance and is not considered welfare. However, it is a state administered program, so the rules may vary somewhat from state to state. Recipients are actually taxed on their UI benefits. So, I don't think she has anything to worry about provided she disclosed her permanent resident status (if asked to do so) on her UI application.

However, if she applies for public assistance programs like food stamps or TANF, it might cause the authorities to go after her sponsor for failing to abide by the terms of the Affidavit of Support.
