Advantages of dual citizenship usa/canada

As for getting Canadian Medical (this is fact is based from BC Medical). Even though you're a canadian citizen, you're not able to get medical benefits if you live in US - because you're no longer a resident. If you return & live in Canada, there is a 6 month waiting period before you can have medical benefits. (i dont know why-its just the rules).

but yes, I found out about this after I canceled my medical and when I was finally approved for a small surgical procedure, the surgery date was after the date of my coverage - even if my inquiry was long before I canceled my medical. BC Medical will not "un-cancel" or extend the date of your medical coverage even if I still have an active home address in Canada or still work in Canada. bottom line was, I don't live in Canada so they told me to walk. - i finally found something I hate about canadian medical. lol.

yeah...I'm going to miss it too.....But, without trying to sound.."impressive, stuck up, gloating" you pick the adjective...I'm very healthy. I don't have any ongoing medical problems. My doctors have always been impressed with my health. So barring maybe a car accident, God forbid!, I'm hoping that by the time I'm able to work, I'll have found a job were the employer pays for the benefits.

I'm confused, borderdriver, as to what this has to do with having dual or not having dual citizenship? If you have to be a resident in the place you live to get healthcare as we all know, then I'm not sure what your point was?

Tim-the point is, is that while you might be healthy as a horse, if something happens to you here in the US and you don't have insurance, you are in big trouble. BIG trouble. Financially. At that point you might as well just go back to Canada!!

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

Okay, I'm really annoyed that the US can dictate what countries I can or cannot visit.

Along with all the other things said about naturalizing..... if your US citizen spouse dies and you move back to your home country, you cannot collect the survivor's pension if you have not naturalised.

You know I can top that one.

How about them dictating a "choice" to you on a life-issue due to their own incompetence and lack of training?

(specifically, TN-1 trying to bring into US a spouse from a non-NAFTA country; in theory possible, but Sod's Law dictates that the petition will be handled by an official who isn't NAFTA-cognisant and doesn't even want to be).

yes I know, I'm probably going to look into travel insurance to cover me for a time. Not sure how it works exactly, but hopefully by 6 months? Probably pricey I know, but worth it. Apparently, I should be able to do that.

That's good to know to. And I guess also makes sense. I'm already getting survivor's from Canada. It's not that much a month, but it will come in handy! (and add to the combined household income)

Make sure you let them know you're moving or you'll end up in a big mess. Also, you'll be taxed at the non-resident rate of 25%.

*pause*

Okay, there was something else I was going to share with you about the pension but I've forgotten!:blush:

You can do that for sure. Lots of places will give you interim insurance.

I knew I forgot something! I receive a survivors pension as well... It expires in September anyways, since I won't be enrolling in school in the fall, but I will be receiving it in June, July and August. I have no idea where to start on how to contact them...

I think I just googled survivors benefit for Canada...something like that..and found a great websit! Course..did I think about putting it in my favourites..of course not!! But it's a government site so shouldn't be hard to find. I'll look for it a little later.

What I did read was that it looked as if it was ok to contact them even after moving by sending them a letter, and I think there was a form to print off, and that they can even direct deposit into an American account as long it was American Bankers Association. I sure like that idea!! Even if I'm taxed a bit, that's ok, as I usually just pay taxes at the end of the year on that.
