I was wondering about that.... as a PR of the US, can I travel to Cuba with no reprecussions coming home? I have a friend getting married there next year, and I'm not sure if I can go to the wedding

As a PR everything I've read is that you are not legally supposed to go to Cuba.. you have to abide under the same laws as a US citizen... would you get caught? probably not.. but should you legally.. from what I understand.. no.

Yeah I wouldn't take the risk and won't go.... I don't break the rules, too scared to get caught!

As for getting Canadian Medical (this is fact is based from BC Medical). Even though you're a canadian citizen, you're not able to get medical benefits if you live in US - because you're no longer a resident. If you return & live in Canada, there is a 6 month waiting period before you can have medical benefits. (i dont know why-its just the rules).

but yes, I found out about this after I canceled my medical and when I was finally approved for a small surgical procedure, the surgery date was after the date of my coverage - even if my inquiry was long before I canceled my medical. BC Medical will not "un-cancel" or extend the date of your medical coverage even if I still have an active home address in Canada or still work in Canada. bottom line was, I don't live in Canada so they told me to walk. - i finally found something I hate about canadian medical. lol.

yeah...I'm going to miss it too.....But, without trying to sound.."impressive, stuck up, gloating" you pick the adjective...I'm very healthy. I don't have any ongoing medical problems. My doctors have always been impressed with my health. So barring maybe a car accident, God forbid!, I'm hoping that by the time I'm able to work, I'll have found a job were the employer pays for the benefits.

With the Cuba thing, it could be a problem going into Canada, getting a flight there and then back through Canada and back into the US.

At immigration they may ask where you were, if you are caught lying you could be in big trouble. If you told the truth, not sure what they'd think. Looking through your bags they may find something of evidence to show you were in Cuba, from gifts to souviners etc. Even little things you may not even think about.

As a dual, I'm not sure how that would play into it either. It could be an interesting situation...

I'm just a wanderer in the desert winds...

I've always been confused by the wording - not recognizing a dual citizenship between Canada and the US -

I took that as to mean, if I naturalized I would have to renounce my Canadian citizenship.

I take it this isn't the case?

Nope. The US oath states of "renouncing all other alliances" but they actually have no way (nor the intellect generally, even if they had a way) to check that you actually take all steps to renounce.

Renunciation of Canadian citizenship must be done explicitly by filing a CIT-0830 with CIC and paying a fee of C$100.

Actually, if you return to Canada different provinces have different waiting periods to re-establish your eligibility for Provincial Health benefits. In Ontario with OHIP it is 3 months. I guess in BC it is 6 months? I believe that for some provinces there is no waiting period at all.

Oh, and about those hordes of killer zombie beavers? I really hate it when that happens!

Always a drag when that happens!

The trick with Canadian healthcare coverage is to not notify them that you're moving until *after* you've left the country! I had surgery before I left, and the surgeon took out my appendix as well, he said "to save you some money" ;)

divorced - April 2010 moved back to Ontario May 2010 and surrendered green card

PLEASE DO NOT PRIVATE MESSAGE ME OR EMAIL ME. I HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT CURRENT US IMMIGRATION PROCEDURES!!!!!

Hah! Cool, I'll add that to my little pile of knowledge.

I was lucky enough to land a job with medical benefits about 2 days after my EAD arrived in the mail, and I've been working there ever since. Dr.'s stuff has been routine - checkups, "yearly exams", and a pretty thorough panel of tests... and I haven't had to pay more than my $25 copay any time I walk in the door. Even for an ultrasound.

If I needed major surgery I think it would cost me $1000 tops (my deductible), which is reasonable. I wouldn't flee back to Canada for it :P

There are also some travel advantages. A dual can travel to Cuba (against which US has had embargo since JFK's time) or Iran (Canada neither initiated nor received diplomatic-relations severance from there, unlike US) by using roundabout route and both passports.

I was wondering about that.... as a PR of the US, can I travel to Cuba with no reprecussions coming home? I have a friend getting married there next year, and I'm not sure if I can go to the wedding

As E said, legally the answer is no. I thought about it as I love Cuba and have been 3 times!! However, I have a massive I-551 stamp in my Canadian passport. When I get a new passport I may try my luck.

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

Okay, I'm really annoyed that the US can dictate what countries I can or cannot visit.

Along with all the other things said about naturalizing..... if your US citizen spouse dies and you move back to your home country, you cannot collect the survivor's pension if you have not naturalised.
