Just as an aside, did anyone fill out the FAFSA (the Federal student financial aid form) before applying for college? Because if you haven't then you should. I did, and received a Pell grant that covers everything.

If your household income (based on your spouses previous year's tax returns) is under the "poverty" guidelines, then you're good to go. Too late for this year, but absolutely fill one out just as soon as you have your '09 information in 2010.

Deadline? Students at my college fill th fafsa out year round because we have classes starting year round. I would double check your info.

Yes, deadline. For example, the deadline for my college's Illinois state aid application for the 2009/2010 school year, passed on May 15th. The deadline for the federal government aid for the same time period, is June 30th 2010, but clearly that's not much use to anyone who wanted to start in Fall '09.

That's not to say that students can't fill in the FAFSA year round - because as you rightly state, they can - but it's clearly advisable to do it sooner rather than later.

It's all here: http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/before003a.htm
