But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

Best of luck to you! I think if you were staying where you are then the money you suggested isn't out of line. Is your family willing to move? I better plan a get together before you leave!

Tbf Carla, you're right: I was thinking about rural Southern Illinois when I said $40k. That would go a long way round here. Don't worry though, if I end up in Maine or NY, I'll be asking for a shitload more than that.

The family can't move right now, due to our eldest being in her last year of high school. But if work away from home is what I need to do to make a success of my life here (initially at any rate) then that's precisely what I'll do. And let's face it, which couples could be more suited to a long-distance relationship than a VJ couple? After months on end apart during the application process, coming home one weekend a month seems like positive luxury.

That said, I'd still rather have something closer, and I will be attending a certain soft drink manufacturer's career fair in Marion next Monday. ;)

I have to ask you guys something with regards to salary, from an Americans perspective. When employers here ask you what salary you are looking at and you give a low figure, they are happy right? So they will probably offer you that lower salary thinking they got a sweet deal. Does it ever occur to them that once someone finds they are being underpaid they will move elsewhere. Finding and hiring good employees does not come cheap.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Depends on the employer. A friend of mine works for a pharma company and just renegotiated her contract. She asked for a modest raise but they gave her more. That way they make sure they get to keep her and she doesn't go out looking. My wifes employer, on the other hand... don't get me started.

a decent position with a lower salary can be leveraged into a similar position with higher salary at another company in about a year, if you can keep your mouth shut. employers are more prone to take someone already employed than a jobless person. they have no idea what you are making when you trade up, so you can ask for 60 without telling them you are only making 40 now if the position really warrants 60. you just have to tell them you're happy in your current slot, but you think their opening has more potential for growth and increase of responsibility (salary).

With the initial phone interview I had they asked how much I wanted - I said high 30k. After three in-person interviews I received an offer (over the phone) that was around 5k more than I requested. I took it. This is with a private company.

At a large university, I was offered a position as a dept assistant - their offer that came in the mail was close to 10k less than what I just got with the private company. I called them and thanked them and let them know I am going with another offer.

The first time they ask for your salary range is just to see if you're within their range they planned for the position. If it's over the range they will not call you back. If it is, there is room for negotiation.

You don't show your salary "hand" in an initial interview.

How would you answer the interviewer's question then?

Good question. They always ask. I usually answer by adding 10k to it. Then they ask me how much my bonuses are, I add 20k to those. Last time I got an offer (from where I am right now), they still came in 5k under my base pay at the time. Fvckers! Took two additional weeks to get to where I wanted to be.

Yep things are a little different here. We just tell people back home the position will pay between x to z, based on experience. I just never understood the reason of an employer doing so here apart from being able to save a few $$$ upfront by underpaying but losing down the track when they have to rehire again.

I overheard a manager pull it off at work and thought that is just moronic and will end up costing the company more in the long run.

one could always research the salary for that job prior to the interview just in case the question comes up. but then again, maybe that's just me.

IS this through a govt contractor? I would say 40K is incredibly low for Philadelphia or any of those cities you listed. I would say closer to 80K - and this is my every day job (HR recruiter).
