I'm on a board where there is a limit to posts and starting topics. As a new person there, it's a limit of 75 posts and 2 new topics in a timespan of 48 hours. Once you've 'used up' those things you have to wait until it cycles again (which it tells you as part of your profile). The longer a person is a member, the more posting/topic privileges.

It's really quite effective in making a person think before using up that volume. And for troublesome sorts, the moderators can reduce that amount as well and increase the time. This would be extremely effective against the 'reactive' troll type who makes up multiple personas. It wouldn't necessarily hinder the longer-term poster with a bee in his/her bonnet. ;)

Not sure how it's implemented or if it would work...but allowing a new person access on a limited basis might just dissuade some who need to be dissuaded. If one only has 2 new topics allowed, one might just post immigration stuff. ;)

24 hours is too long to have to wait to post... most people don't actually join unless there is something that they need to ask THEN, unless it's a board that you can't even see until you're a member. 30 minutes would be okay - it just sounds like a processing delay, rather than a 'you might be a troll you have to wait till we tell you it's okay to say anything'.

An option would be to identify forums where trolling and/or flame wars are most likely to occur ("off-topic" comes to mind) and introduce the 24h delay there. 30 minutes would be just fine for the rest of the site.

Nothing could/would stop someone from registering under a bunch of different "identities" and saving them for future use. If I was a "troll" -- which I am not -- I would do that. That way I could circumvent the time restriction.

I was so happy to find VJ and totally desperate when I did. I don't know what I would have done when I first joined if I couldn't post my questions immediately.....
