Sorry about the recent series of trolls here. I am weeding out the issues so please be patient. The main problem has been with a few people that want to re-register to continue to rant on about certain topics. Their topics tend to be purposely enticing of the community. I am taking all the steps I can to prevent future occurrences. As always please PM me if you see any suspicious activity :).

Thanks for the patience and help!

Remember 'Manofaction"? I think "Sincereman" is the same guy - he was ranting about feminists.

Captain,

Would you consider maybe putting a lock on new members to prevent them from posting for the first 24 hours? Just enough time delay to discourage trolling?

Maybe, but I am worried about new members that want to post immediately. Maybe a 30 minute window. Just long enough to be annoying. Not sure, thoughts?

How about compulsory timelines for newbies?

I would agree about not making them wait too long to post, there are honest legitimate people who might have just found the site and really want a question answered and 24 hours might seem a bit long to wait frustrated.

Possibly a questionaire at signup as to which type of visa they are investigating, what country the beneficiary is coming from, and maybe....what forms (if any) have been filed so far. Have at least the visa type and beneficiary country as required answers so they can't skip them in the sign up. Don't require that for the forms because there are times when people are first starting the process and have not filed anything as of yet, but are seeking information to get started. Automatically link the results of the questionaire into the timeline form for them, so that part is already filled out, if they have forms already filed that too could be linked in so the timeline would take more shape.

Notify them that there will be a 30 minute or so wait for the registration to go through, then based on the type of visa they are seeking information on have the page transition to the faq pertaining to that type of visa with maybe a suggestion that the information they are seeking might be found here while they wait. When they are first able to sign onto the forums after registration, and being directed to the faq, have their initial sign in to the forums dump them in the forum pertaining to the type of visa they are seeking automatically.

Additionally for the first 24 hours I would suggest limiting the number of topics the new members can create so they are not able to spam multiple boards trolling?

How about a 3 post limit for the first 24 hours. They can ask their immediate questions and read all responses and even have a chance to offer follow-up information, but it wouldn't be enough to conduct a flame war.

Captain Ewok,

I like StevenJinky's idea and agree with 24 hours rather than 30 minutes. New (and old) members would benefit from reading before they start posting - a good habit that many never develop.

I joined a German forum where new members had their posts (fore the first few weeks) reviewed before they were actually posted on the board (there was a time delay of 12-24 hrs before they appeared).... this may be too overwhelming a task for the volume on this site, but it did help ensure 'trust' and legitimacy in the members who were posting.

8-30-05 Met David at a restaurant in Germany

3-28-06 David 'officially' proposed

4-26-06 I-129F mailed

9-25-06 Interview: APPROVED!

10-16-06 Flt to US, POE Detroit

11-5-06 Married

7-2-07 Green card received

9-12-08 Filed for divorce

12-5-08 Court hearing - divorce final

A great marriage is not when the "perfect couple" comes together.

It is when an imperfect couple learns to enjoy their differences.

Holy cow, guys! Sorry for the multiple posts...

I don't think a 3 post limit will discourage trolling because they usually just post once and then run off.

Captain, the 30 minute window sounds good. You can adjust it if it doesn't seem to discourage enough trolls.

I think you are right above, 30 minutes seems good. Many people might need a fast answer to an immigration question. I liked the idea of having a 30 minute delay with an faq link included for basic questions. In my case, I actually did quite a bit of reading before I actually joined the site but I can imagine many people joining now, especially with this confusion about IMBRA going on.

This troll thing is all new to me, I used a message board once in college. It seems they will always come, no matter what you do so the members themselves have to also know how to handle it effectively. At this point, in my rookie status, I'm vowing not to even respond to them anymore, that last one did it for me.
