Hello all,

I was wondering if you could help out with a question that I have. My sister has dual citizenship. She has Canadian citizenship (born and raised in Quebec) and also has EU Citizenship (Portuguese). She has been living abroad in Ireland for quite some time and will be returning to Canada in late summer.

She does not know which passport to use when returning, as she has been outside Canada for longer than 6 months, but would like to return back to Canada to make it her permanent home once again. She is thinking she will use her Canadian passport to leave Ireland so she can return to Canada using her Canadian passport. I know it's not smart to travel with two passports, but she did for whatever reason.

Will she encounter issues when she returns to Canada if she uses her Canadian passport? Will she be penalized for being out of the country for longer than 6 months? Any advice/information would be greatly appreciated.

Are you sure? Why won't they question her about being out of the country for more than 6 months?

Don't think there's anything wrong with travelling with 2 passports - i plan to when I become a US citizen.

I don't see why she wouldn't use her Cdn passport upon returning to Canada - not sure if they'll subject her to additional questioning, but she should answer honestly and say she is moving back to Canada after living in Ireland for X.......I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

Of course, once she settles in her home province of choice she'll have to get registered for healthcare and go through the waiting period (in ON 90 days) before she has healthcare through the province again.

Yes, I am 100% sure. She is a Canadian citizen, she can enter and leave the country as she pleases

Not true.

For those with dual-citizenship, the other passport actually makes it much easier to enter the non-Canada country.

(in the case the other country is the US, a US passport is mandatory)

She should use her Canadian passport as a Canadian citizen. She should also tell them that she is a returning resident. That way she can 'start the clock' on such things as her waiting time before she is eligible for Provincial health benefits, etc. They used to stamp 'returning resident' in the passport and the date although I know they didn't always do that. If she can get some sort of stamp she will have proof of her return. Otherwise, have her to make sure she keeps her boarding pass showing her flight to Canada so she has some proof of her re-entry date. She will need it for when she applies for benefits.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

You can travel with how ever many you want..as long as they are legit!

Canadian passport to enter Canada. Like Kathryn said, she needs to get the ball rolling for getting her health benefits back so we mig ht as well explain she's returning resident.

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard
