My fiance and I have just begun our application. He sent his I-129F and my G-325A on May 29 this year. He is residing in California. My agency said that after he gets our case number, I can finally start processing my part here. I am in Cebu. Is there a difference between the receipt and the NOA1? When do we see the case number? Do we have to wait for a week or so? My colleague whose fiance is in Illinois said that we could get the first NOA only a day after the first application. I really need enlightenment from those who have already experienced the whole process.

NOA1 is the receipt. The case number on that will be the USCIS case number which has no use beyond the service center, and I am not sure what good that will do any agency in PI. I think they mean your NVC/Consulate case number which you will get after approval, several months down the road. The case number you receive on the NOA1 will really not let you do anything you cannot already do.

The NOA1 will be dated the day they received it or maybe the day after, but you may not get the letter for up to 30 days.

You can relax, he just filed so you have a "give or take" 4 month wait for him to get NOA2. After he gets NOA2, you can begin to gather your documents and you'll have plenty of time, because his paperwork still has to go to NVC and then to Manila.

The only thing some people do way in advance is get an xray of their chest to be sure their lungs are clear. You'll still have to get another xray during your physical, but at least you'll already know the status of your lungs.
