Plans to build 21K-square-foot palace get canned

A Russian billionaire's plan to raze his existing house and build a 30,000-square-foot house with 26 bathrooms, an underground parking garage, a Finnish bath and a Turkish bath in Greenwich, Conn., has been thrown out, according to reports.

Valery and Olga Kogan submitted plans to have a 19,000-square-foot house (which they bought for $18.5 million in 2005) razed and replaced with a 30,000-square-foot mansion. After those plans drew criticism from concerned neighbors, the Kogans came back with a plan to build a scaled back 21,000-square-foot house. But as of a couple days ago, that plan was reportedly withdrawn by Valery's wife Olga.

"I still do not understand why this project has brought such criticism as it is clearly permitted to be constructed," Olga Kogan wrote in a letter to the Greenwich Planning and Zoning Commission, according to Greenwich Time. "As you may know, the application has been vehemently opposed by the residents of Simmons Lane, particularly Charles Lee," she reportedly wrote.

But this isn't the Kogans' first time raising eyebrows with their adventures in real estate. The pair also caused a stir last year when they bought five lots in a seaside town in Israel, on which they reportedly planned to build a $50 million estate. The couple also has a home on the Peninsula in Atherton. And although we couldn't find the exact address, Olga Kogan's name comes up in the San Mateo County Recorder's Office database.

It's a fair thing to consider.

Super rich are not going to suddenly become just rich just because of a what? 5% increase on their taxes. I am sure a fair few will manage not to pay any either, as is currently the case with all the nice legal loopholes

Only 5% today. Another 5% tomorrow. Then they change the definition of "rich"... just wait and see.

If a rich man employs me, he isn't doing me a favor. I am providing his business with a service it needs and he is compensation me for it.

You're not doing him a favor either. Taxing the rich to solve societies financial problems is a losing proposition because the rich, more often than not, have resources to find loopholes and ways around restrictions. They can also vote with their feet, and there is always someone who is happy to give them what they want for a reciprocal benefit.

I live by this, and yes your right the rich guy builds a huge home, well theres roofers, construction, wiring, landscaping, maintenance. and i come in just before he moves in and put in the satellite dish.

after i make my money i could care less that guy is gonna be paying thousands a month in utilities and up keep.

Trickle down economics has proven to be a false way to 'enrich all.' We are living with the consequences of this theory now, and it is a disaster.
