All Japan filers...has anyone had any good experience with translating Japanese Koseki Tohon into English for Visa purposes?

My wife needs to translate her Koseki Tohon into English for NVC.

Some people say they do it themselves and state that they are competent to translate from Japanese to English. Has anyone here done this and had any problems?

In addition, where in Tokyo can we find a Notary Public other than U.S. Embassy who can notarize documents?

I did it myself and just wrote literally what everything said. They accepted it at the Embassy with no questions or problems. Do it together with your wife and have her explain things to you and you write it in English if you're having problems.

I don't know where to find a notary public in Japan, but if you're trying to find a one for the purpose of notarizing the document that you translated, it's not necessary. You just need to write at the bottom, "I hereby swear that I am fluent in Japanese and am capable of translating this document" and get the translator's signature, be it you or your wife.

I translated my koseki on my own and had no problem.

It might be helpful to check the the embassy Tokyo website.

They have the format for koseki at http://tokyo.usembassy.gov/pdfs/wwwfhhregister.pdf

The website also has information regarding Japanese notaries.

Take a look at the bottom of this page at http://tokyo.usembassy.gov/e/acs/tacs-7126a.html

Good luck!
