Just another day in the local paper... two stories that make you shake your head and wonder....

http://www.chicagotribune.com/features/col...0,456714.column

Dear Amy: My husband, who is 45, had open heart surgery two years ago.

Recently at a family gathering his older brother put him in a headlock and tripped him up by bending his knee out from under him. (Ever since the surgery he has a bad knee that swells up and has to be drained. Now he has two bad knees.)

When my husband got up from rolling around on the ground in pain, his brother called him a "pansy" and punched him hard in the chest.

Now we don't want to have anything to do with this guy.

We have tried to explain that he could cause serious harm to my husband and that they are not kids anymore. (I'm sorry, but you don't punch someone in the chest when his chest is held together by wires.)

His brother does not understand what the big deal is and feels he did nothing wrong. Are we wrong to not want to have any more contact?

-- Fed Up

Dear Fed Up: Your husband probably guards his fragile health by staying away from cigarettes, swordplay and other dangerous activities.

It's also a good idea for him to steer clear of a toxic sibling who is either too slow-witted to understand or too mean-spirited to care that a blow to the chest could prove fatal.

Don't bother drawing a diagram for this bully -- just give him a wide and wary berth.

 Ok, if that's not enough for you... try this one....

Evanston

Cops say mom left kids outside Evanston bar

Tribune staff report

June 5, 2009

A 47-year-old Chicago woman was charged with two counts of misdemeanor child endangerment after she left her two children in her car outside an Evanston tavern where she was drinking, authorities said.

Shayna Shelton of the 1600 block of Howard Street was charged May 29 after police responded to a call from someone who saw two young children alone in a car outside a tavern on the 2300 block of Howard.

Police said the children, ages 6 and 9, were alone in the vehicle for at least 30 minutes and were not hurt. The Illinois Department of Child and Family Services took custody of the children, and Shelton is scheduled for a June 12 hearing at the Skokie courthouse, authorities said.

Story number two doesn't seem to be too bad to me.

You don't think there's anything seriously wrong with a woman to leave 2 kids alone in the car while she's sitting in the bar getting drunk?? Not my idea of good parenting!

May be because these things are common in India and parents don't get arrested if they leave their kids in the house alone for an hour or so. Sure bad parenting but may be it doesn't amaze me is all.

I hope you don't have kids.

Don't worry I don't have kids. So there, I hope you have a goodnight sleep.

Spooky was a bit harsh (imho). He didn't mean it like that, I'm sure.

Trinket it's not just that the kids were left alone. Kids 6 and 9 left at home for an hour ---- that's a bit young, but not unreasonable, I agree.

This is different. The kids were in a car, parked on the street. And the mother was in a tavern drinking, for chrissake. And after she'd had a few, no doubt her intention would be to get in the car with the kids and drive off. Please don't tell me you think that's ok! (It's really not ...).

Thank God.

Oh well, maybe he did.

At least she didn't invite them in to do a couple of shots, right?

Here's something funny that happened across the street from my house a few years ago and it was completely hysterical.

Love On A Rooftop

Long Island couple busted after tryst atop school building

JULY 18--Meet Rebekah Albee and Anthony Oddo. The Long Island lovebirds were arrested yesterday and charged with public lewdness after they were spotted having sex on the roof of a Port Jefferson school. According to Suffolk County, N.Y. cops, Albee, 19, and the 24-year-old Oddo--who were nakedly trysting atop The John F. Kennedy Middle School--were "clearly visible from street" when officers responded to a call around 4:30 PM. When Albee and Oddo spotted the cops, they tried to flee, but were nabbed "in the rear of the building," police said. It is unclear why the couple chose the roof for their afternoon rendezvous, though Oddo is listed as homeless, so that might have limited their options. Along with the misdemeanor lewdness rap, both were hit with a criminal trespass count, also a misdemeanor (Oddo was also charged with resisting arrest). Before posing for her mug shot, Albee threw on a shirt, though her homeless beau remained defiantly topless. The Albee/Oddo coupling, of course, immediately reminded TSG of the Louisiana duo who climbed a 200-foot water tower for some really high-altitude hijinks. Brenda Orme and John Meyers told cops they simply wanted to knock boots "on top of the world." (2 pages)

I will admit I didn't see it that way. Yes drinking and driving is bad and shouldn't be done under any circumstances. I was more looking it as leaving the kids alone for a while. It happens all the time back in the old country, but we are at home and do know not to answer doors for anyone other than parents.

I'm not trying to be a jerk. I think it is very irresponsible and dangerous to leave two young kids locked in a car for 30 minutes for any reason, let alone going out for a few drinks.

I agree about the irresponsibility of the woman in the news story. I am referring to your comment about Trinket (hoping that she doesn't have kids). Trinket is not the one who left kids in the car! All she did was to say that she didn't find the newspaper story that shocking. That hardly makes her an unfit mother! Trinket is a dear and kind Sister in Commies for Christ.... we stand up for each other ;).

I took her reply to mean that she thought it was not a big deal and it was ok for the mother to have left the kids to go drink. If I am wrong, I apologize.

Was that really a shocking story for me? No, it wasn't. And I never applied that its ok to leave kids in the car alone. What I meant was it wasn't uncommon for people to leave their kids like that. Most parents have lost their kids for a little while in their life time. I mean lost them in some mall or some park or things like that.

It just didn't come as a shocking news to me. And seriously don't worry, I know I am not yet fit for being a mother, so no motherhood for me for at least 3-4 years, I will learn by that time :)
