Naked Man Nabbed on the Long Island Expressway

LONG ISLAND, N.Y. (WPIX) - Suffolk officials nabbed a man who apparently liked to stand on the side of the Long Island Expressway wearing nothing but a smile.

Authorities on Thursday arrested Joseph Gagliano of Yaphank, after receiving multiple phone calls over the past week and a half, with people claiming to have seen the 39-year-old man wandering naked along the expressway at various spots between Yaphank and Islandia.

Officials said they were able to track Gagliano down after noticing a pattern in the sightings. On Thursday, deputies were on alert when they spotted a man emerging from the woods around 7:45 p.m. near Exit 57. Gagliano tried to flee in a 2004 Jeep but was later tracked down by police.

"He was driving the wrong way down the service road trying to get away," Chief Michael Sharkey of the Suffolk County Sheriff's Office told Newsday.

Gagliano was arrested at the scene and charged with public lewdness, disorderly conduct, reckless driving, and multiple vehicle and traffic violations. He was arraigned Friday and is being held on $5,000 cash and $10,000 cash bond.
