My mother-in-law & brother-in-law both have propane grills. It's quick, easily controllable and gets the job done. But to me, you've lost the point. You might as well drag your stove onto the patio.

I love the ceremony of charcoal grilling. Setting up the coals in the chimney starter. Getting a drink whilst the coals burn. Laying out the coals and adjusting the vents - am I slow cooking? Direct heat or indirect? Am I going to lay some soaked oak chips on the coals? The uncertainty of over- or under-cooking. Getting smoky. Having flare-ups. There's something neanderthal there for me. Me make fire. Cook sabre-tooth tiger. Add BBQ sauce.

I don't get out much. I do bloody good ribs, tho.

Definitely charcoal for us. We like to smell like our food.

Kidding aside, we think charcoal grilling gives food a better flavor.

I agree with everyone who says charcoal gives the food better flavor. However, you have to wait A LOT longer for the charcoal to get going. For those of us who are impatient, it's nice to have propane. You turn it on and in 5 minutes you can start cooking.

In Brazil bbq is associated with fun, party, spending some time together, it's not like cooking that when you don't feel like spending time in the kithcken you just cook something fast or pre-cooked, or in cans, etc. We use charcoal and enjoying the wait for the meat to be done, the smell, it's all part of it.

Charcoal is the only way to go. If you are using propane, you might as well be cooking in an oven.

I have the old fashioned Weber on my back deck. I use the charcoals that have the lighter fluid soaked in them so they heat up fairly quickly...prolly in about 10 to 15 minutes I would guess. I am scared of propane being on my property and I love love love the smell and taste of charcoals. Plus it's ideal for toasting marshmallows later on in the evening since they stay heated for so long.
