It depends - there are application costs; There are costs for medical exams and vaccinations; and other documents you will need to get; costs for hotels/airfare if you do not live in the city where the interview is held. For my wife in Colombia (she came on K1) the total cost was around $2,000 (no lawyers involved). And that's the first step - then there is the AOS - currently around $1100; then there is the removal of conditions in another two years after that - another $800 or so; then the final one Citizenship in about three years or five - and that's another $700 or so.

Total cost is around - $5,000 to the final step - and its harder, if you do not work or can't find a decent job in USA - then not only are you not contributing, you may get depressed and worse strain the relationship. Its not an easy process - there is a huge emotional and a very big financial commitment on the part of the US citizen doing this as well as the foreign fiance. Not easy by any means - do support him in his endeavor and good luck.

And once she arrives, you'll have to send money back home for the sudden medical emergencies, lots of life or death situations, family members who are not in the hospital want to start a business and so funding businesses is your new responsibility too rich man, the electricity is about to be cut so if YOU don't send money by tomorrow guess what happens, if YOU don't buy medicine they will die so be prepared, your finance's sister just had a baby and YOU are asked to pay the hospital bill so send condoms right now (!!!). That is just the tip of the iceberg, get ready, open your wallet rich man.

hello everyone! I would just like to know approximately how much did you spend on processing the K-1 visa until the visa arrived?Hope someone can answer my question. Thank you! :help:

I could be a smart @ss, but accurate, and say if you have to ask....(you can finish)

The visa fees and application fees are straighforward and covered in the guides. $455+$131+$1010 PLUS medical exam (varies from a little to a lot) translations, mailing fees, etc., etc. Not to mention travel costs which is kind of up to you. Communication costs, etc. All in All, a LOT less expensive than meeting and marrying the girl next door.

This may come as a surprise to some people. When you get married you are creating a family and that family has costs. Does someone think marrying an American woman is FREE?? Do you think an American woman may have a mother (just maybe) and maybe she will need some support? No one ever helped their American wife's sister? Judging from all the co-sponsor questions we see, there is a lot of that going on.

I really don't care for this putting a price tag on it. It isn't a thing which is for sale. Yes, there are government fees to pay, and in a life there are not other fees to pay? Even f it is $5000 or $10000, what of it? There is also college to pay for, cars, insurance, utility bills (they DO go up when you go from 1 person in a home to 3 or 4) I mean this can get ridiculous and to attribute these costs to a certain nationality of people is ridiculous. Everyone needs to eat, be clothed, have medical care and have concerns about extend family. It is life.

Hopefully people old enough to get married and file for K-1 visas have considered these things. This is not a "date", it is a marriage.

This page does a good job of laying out the government fees and approximately when they are paid.

You are right, not all for sure. Although my WIFE'S family are in need, they are very humble. We give with an open heart.

However, since the OP was concerned about cost, he should know that sometimes (probably more often than not), family back home wants help. They don't want "loans" for business or to "borrow" money, they want help which means they want all giving to be more like a gift. The OP can decide for himself just how much help he can afford based on the situation of the family of his financee.

Sorry, one last thought on this.... people in the USA most often think at the individual level, once they get married, of course they consider the needs of their immediate family, it isn't normal to continuously help family members who are outside the immediate family. Sure, people in the US will help extended family through occasional hardship, but not continuously, forever and ever. Independence is in our DNA. If the OP is struggling financially, when his wife starts to work and sends part of her income back home continuously, with no end in sight, this could cause problems in the marriage. Everyone should be aware of what is ahead.

No question one should consider all aspects of the relationship and if it will only cause resentment, then you are doomed to fail, best not to go down that road.
