Does getting a bonus mean your losing your job?

Hello friends,

I know my topic may sound a little off the ordinary, but I am a K-1 visa applicant and my dad is skeptical about me getting a bonus. He is saying that if you get a bonus in this economy that means that they are going to let me go. He said its something he heard on the news, and I don't buy it. My company decided to give people bonuses because they can not afford to give us increases. I am just concerned because I am a K-1 applicant and I can not afford to lose my job right financially as well.

This is really not a K1 question, it's a general question about employment practices.

Suggest to the organizers to move it to a more appropriate area.

In answer to OP- I've never heard of that before. In my industry (financial services) end of year bonuses are routinely given out as part of compensation. They are usually based upon company performance and individual performance and contribution. In no way is the granting of a bonus seen as an indication of trouble or impending layoffs. On the contrary - most firms I know stop paying their bonuses in rough times, and pay them out only when they are feeling times are good.

Good luck with your K1 filing.

A bonus is a good thing. Relax.

I don't have a answer for the OP's original question ... but I do know there are a lot of bonus and salary freezes going on out there .... but the gas prices seem to feel like they can creep back up there to the ridicilous price again ... I think I got off topic

My husband's company gives bonuses four times a year based upon individual performance and company performance. It is an expected part of his pay schedule and he is definitely not being laid off. It sounds reasonable to me for a company to give bonuses as a reward for good performances rather than a pay increase, especially in these difficult times - so if you are getting a bonus, congratulations.

I hope not. Bonuses are part of my compensation package. I would think the opposite, if you get a bonus in this economy it would likely mean you are a good and valuable employee...the kind they KEEP when things get rough.

You are not a visa applicant. Your foreign fiancee WILL be a visa applicant. You are a petitioner.

Thanks for your assurances, and I felt the same way. I think my dad is just in shock because of the economy being so bad. I should be happy :).
