Hi everybody!

My wife recently received her CR-1 visa after her interview in Montreal. Her plan is to do the big move in a couple of weeks.

However, she does want to come down for a visit this week to help me sort out our new home.

So, my questions are these:

1) Does she have to immigrate at the border now that she has her visa? (I assume yes?) Or can she just come for a visit and chose to immigrate in a couple of weeks?

2) If she does have to immigrate at that time, does she have to immigrate her car as well? She hasn't yet received the necessary paper work to do so. Could she immigrate herself now and her car later?

That's about it. If anyone knows the answers to the above, I'd be greatly appreciative. Thanks!

I don't think either of these questions have a yes/no answer.

As for presenting her visa - maybe yes, maybe no. In theory she could try to cross the border and not use it - but it is a CR1 - why wouldn't you?

For the car, for some people it is not an issue to import the car later (as an example, krikit did this) - however when we crossed the border the agent told us that if we did not import it that day, we were not taking it with us - so I say be prepared to import it on the day she does present her visa.

There are some others on here who imported their vehicle at a later date, but I imported mine at the POE. Svirac, contact the POE your wife will be using and ask them: Locate a POE

You ruined my example !

Oops! :hehe:

I always thought with a CR-1 visa you can come and go as soon as you immigrate, so it shouldn't be an issue at all. Immigrate one day, leave the next! :) She could wait and process the vehicle at another time if she doesn't have the paperwork.

yes with a cri1 or ir-1, u can enter and immediately head back to canada if one wishes. many have done this to get the paperwork rolling. looking at the ops timeline, he/she just had the interview, so they are waiting for the express post envelope to arrive with their visa!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1
