ha ha.. we were helping to clean out a garage and there was an old flag in the rubble (US) and the Americans with me threw it on a dumpster.. I picked it up and said ABSOLUTELY NOT.. we're not putting this thing in the landfill..

Hubby took it home and burned it in the backyard under the cover of night :)

Which brings up another topic - Americans are very particular about the treatment fo the flag - i mean...I remember learning about flag care in Brownies, but don't think much of it. One day we were putting our American flag up and we were struggling with the hooks , so i threw the flag down on the front steps for a second to help him and I thought Don was going to have a heart attack - he immediately jumped over and picked it up and I was like - what's the big deal - it's a flag...a piece of cloth.......

Don't say that to an American :) it's much more then a piece of cloth...I guess my Cdn attitude is more relaxed about our flag.

It is a piece of cloth. Americans put so much pride in things like that though.

Hey remember way back when they raised the Canadian flag upside down at the world series game? I mean we were slightly offended but if it had been us doing that to the American flag I bet they would have declared war.

When I moved here, my in-laws put a medium sized American flag on our front lawn. It's still there, I don't mind it. I don't know if I'd put out a Canadian flag, maybe on Canada Day!

I dunno.. i know what you are saying Sprailenes, but at the same time the flag has the power to inspire and unite in some ways.. My eyes always tear to see the maple leaf raised at the Olympics.. and I'm always really excited to see it flown here in the US.. It just represents my heritage, and my pride in place. I think it's important to respect those things that are valuable to you, and it can be taken to an extreme, but when you see a shabby, ripped, & torn flag a flying, it's a little sad.

when i worked at a local paper the veterans used to totally get upset when the flag flown above the office was in anyway damaged.. it was a near riot.. and their reasoning? we fought long and hard for that flag, treat her right.

I've not moved south yet, but if we put flags up, we will definitely be sure to fly both. My fiance is dual citizen, and has spent more of his life in Canada than in the US (though we didn't know each other when he was here, argh), and I know he will agree with me that the Canada flag would need to be included! I wouldn't be able to go 'home' to see ONLY an American flag flying... it just wouldn't be right. lol

It is perhaps 'just a cloth'... but like Emancipation said, it's a symbol, and representation.

 <-- don't use the flag for that! lol

Well I answered the poll even though I am not living with my SO at the moment. When we did live together we put up the Canadian and American flag. We taped them both to the wall in the 2nd bedroom next to each other. Where he is currently living, as he moved to a different state the flags are up in the 2nd bedroom for when I arrive! He is very patriotic about the American flag as well, when we had to take it down he was extremely careful not to let it fall on the floor and he folded it up military style, he said that if it fell he would have to go outside and burn it. I think they said they tought him in basic training...anyways...That's something too he was very patriotic about, but at the same time got annoyed at if he got stuck on base trying to drive home, or to work in the morning and the base is at a standstill(cars pulled over, sometimes people standing outside their car saluting if they are in uniform because they have to) while the flag is lowered for the day and the american anthem is playing over the loudspeakers.

Americans take the flag seriously because of the places it's been flown, and the symbolism it represents -- liberty, freedom, sacrifice.

Canadians do as well.

I don't do flags. But I do beer and BBQ. :P

I like that.

I don't put out any flag, but I have always had (even in Canada) a giant Texas flag which I had the US flag beside it and then later got a normal sized Georgia Flag. Right now the Georgia Flag is in my game/office room on one wall and the Texas flag takes up most of the other wall (with the US flag besides it).

I have never thought about ever actually displaying them outside of course, especially in Colorado miles from either. But I did consider bringing down my Georgia flag to my friends place in central Florida for the big Geogria/Florida football game and flying it on their property as all their neighbors are die hard gator fans and they know I'm a die hard Georgia Fan. So thought that might be pretty funny to taunt the neighbors in their own territory like that...

I'm just a wanderer in the desert winds...

When I was a kid, we never did flags. Not even on 4th of July. My dad always said if you need a flag to remind you of your patriotism then you've got bigger problems. One of my best friends on the block was British and his father would fly an American flag , followed by a Union Jack, and then a Welsh flag. On Canada day he would fly the canadian flag in honor of a member of the commonwealth, and on the 4th of july, he'd fly the Union Jack at half staff. There was one neighbor who got so pissed he called the police to try to make him take it down.
