Hey guys. I've decided that I would like to take my 4yr old daughter with me to Canada for a visit to my hometown of Victoria. This way she can see where Mommy grew up and visit with Grandma before she passes on.

My question is this: Has anyone traveled back home with a US born child before? I have daughters us passport and my Canadian ones getting renewed as we speak. What else will I need. My brain seems to think that my husband should be writting a letter to state he gives me permission to take daughter up there and back for a visit and what our tavel time frame is going to be. Do I need to get that notorized? Do I need anything else?

Many thanks.

Yes, a few months ago my son and hubby traveled to BC. We live in Northern New Hampshire. I drove them across the border to fly out of Montreal. I also picked them up there when I returned. I was with them both times they crossed the border, but just in case, I wrote a letter stating that my husband had permission to take our son to visit his family. I listed the dates of the trip and my contact numbers. I also wrote that I gave my husband permission to make emergency medical decisions for my son. I signed it and had it notarized, just to be on the safe side. I also purchased travel insurance for the trip through AAA, since our medical insurance would not cover my son in another country.

Hello Cloudy 9,

All you need for travel is a letter from other parent stating that they are aware of the trip, duration, where you will be staying and their contact number. Everytime I crossed the border with my kids I have always had my letter and have never been asked for it.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for your response. I didn't think of where I'd be staying. I'll add that to the letter.

BTW does the letter have to be hand written or can it be typed, signed etc.
