I am having difficulty getting the information to fit in the forms when printed. When I look at the dates there is a "+" sign that blocks the date. The same happens on other fields too. I called the USCIS help line and was told that I could not convert the pdf files to word. Even though the forms look identical I was told they would be rejected. The USCIS help line said print them out and fill them in by hand.

Does anyone have any idea how I can get the data to fit when it is printed out? I don't want to have to hand write 8 pages (4 pgs for each).

Thanks,

Tom

either handwrite them (smaller print) - or

use a continuation sheet if the info is to large for the field.

My Advice is usually based on "Worst Case Scenario" and what is written in the rules/laws/instructions. That is the way I roll... -Protect your Status - file before your I-94 expires.

Hi China Quest,

Unfortunately, you can't change the font size on the PDF form.

What my husband and I did was to type out the information on a separate sheet of paper (using MS Word), and we inserted the number on the form and the question so they have a reference. After that we attached it to the form. I did that for my I-130, my I-129F and my G-325As.

Hope this helps.

hand write the questions that doesn't fit or use smaller font.

Ok, how do I change the size of the font in the pdf form????

That's the solution. If the only problem is the dates, just leave out the year and hand write it in.

True with the free Adobe reader, but not true with the professional version of Adobe Acrobat, but that would set you back more than a couple of hundred bucks, then they change the pfd format every year to force you to pay more for an upgrade. Not that it's any better, but you just cannot open government forms that are changed every year with an older version of Arcobat.

Just made it last year filling out the N-400 for my wife, could open, fill, and save the form using version 6, but then I couldn't print it out, was very angry. But I copied the file to a memory stick and tried it on an older computer with version 5 on it, it printed out fine. The older versions of Adobe reader let you fill out the form and print it out, but you couldn't save it, least they added that feature to versions 8 and 9 so you can go back to that form and make corrections if you have to.

I am from the old school, while everything looks great on the screen, miss errors, but on a printed page, can spot an error a mile away.

Would be nice if the government would make Adobe reader use selectable fonts on their forms, maybe next year, write to your congressman. Would be also nice if Adobe Acrobat was forward compatible, but that is how they make their money.

Thanks for all the replies. It is more than just a date or two, it is most of the stinking form. I think what I will do is convert the filled in form from pdf to a Word doc and change the font size so things fit and attach all the pages as a continuation. The form looks 99.9% like the original when converted to Word so I hope that it will be acceptable as a continuation. There is no way that I can print small enough by hand to fit things into the blocks.

If everything is as difficult as this I think I should hire an attorney to handle the rest. I don't trust the bureaucrats to play fair if they can't even provide a form that is useable.

I know, I know, this is going to be painful.... and for no good reason!

Simply add an additional sheet (in Word) with the full text answers as the form instructions state.

May be the only way to go unless you have the tools, not only the font size, but the font used, recall one form using the courier font where an "i" takes the same space as a "w", did switch to the arial narrow. Recall the only problem I had was with those Spanish addresses, more like typing in a book than an address.

Recall playing with Reader, did let you type in the entire line, but would only show a part of it when printed out, but did say the font size was automatic, yeah, sure. So I switched to Acrobat Pro, used arial narrow and an 8 point font, then the entire address was there. Really doubt if I could hand print that small and clear, was perfectly readable. So using that addendum sheet may be your only option.

Been awhile, believe you have to reference each blank like "see attached sheet" if you can fit that in, with your name and alien number at the top of that sheet with reference to the block number.

What you really want to avoid is to have your application rejected because their forms were not filled out the way they would like you to. And they really don't tell you why it was rejected, just rejected. That you have to figure out for yourself.

I wouldn't change the font size - we went with the "Hand write things that don't fit and/or supplemental sheet" where relevant...

Also, freely abbreviate where necessary, such as "09 or Sep" for September or 57 for 1957, St for Street, Ave for Avenue. You may also use two lines for an address. It will be clear what you did when there are no associated dates for the second line and the dates pick up for address two on line three. Some things require extra sheets anyway.

Also, your profile indicates K3. Do yourself a favor and skip filing the I-129F and stick with the CR1 visa path. K3 is virtually obsolete and has been for a couple years.

If the problem is mainly the "+" signs, but things otherwise fit reasonably well:

In the free version of Adobe Reader, select "Preferences..." from the "Edit" menu. In the Preferences dialog box, select the category labeled "Forms". Find the check box labeled "Show text field overflow indicator" and turn it off. Click "Ok".

The forms will no longer show the "+" sign. However, if they overflow the box they'll still be clipped.

User a free sofware called Foxit Reader (http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/reader/). This allows you to do more than Adobe reader. You may also need this in future when you have to file DS-230 since in reguar reader the data of this form is not saved. With Foxit you will able to save data entered in DS-230 form.
