The Soviets left in 1988 and we weren't supplying the Taliban which didn't exist until later. Hegemony implies we wanted to rule Afghanistan but the truth is we simply ignored it once the Soviets left.

It may not have been named the taliban, but it was the same group with the same ideals. We funded them, gave them arms to fight the soviets (Operation Cyclone). Hegemony doesn't necessarily mean that we wanted to rule afghanistan. It was a part of a greater overall foreign policy war for influence in different geopolitical areas. We ignored it after the Soviets left because we no longer had any reason to stick around.

And that's Obama's fault too.

Don't be hard on Marc's unrefined edumication. He learned all he knows while in prison. He's a fine example of liberal prison reform. Give 'em a bowl of Fruity Pepples and a bib, his mangina's quiverin tonight and it isn't for just any love.

So ironic.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

I am extremely impressed with Obama's speech. This was a huge step.

I think everyone has unrealistically high expectations of a speech - like he said one speech isn't going to solve everything.

However, I think it was a good start. Not everyone is 100% in agreement on what he said, but how could you be? With most of these conflicts you're either on one side or the other, very few have any middle ground in these conflicts.

Plus, I'm partial. I gotta crush on Obama.

LOL... my husband knows it too. We went to D.C. for Memorial Day weekend and I insisted on going to Obama's house. He tells me, "it's called the white house." We get there, he shakes his head & says "This relationship you have with "Presdiente Obama," yeah.... it's not healthy."

Since I was on the road yesterday, switched on PBS radio, again and listened to both the speech and an expert analysis of it. One problem is that the Muslim religion is not an organized religion with a single head, but many different factions. Feel Obama was trying to reach out to just those that want peace. Feel his most important statement was that every human being should have a say in how their government operates. You can keep Iran in mind with this statement. And he did not have kind words for those that terrorize. Thought it was a common sense approach to attempting peace in the world, a far cry from the last administration.

But we still have a lot of problems at home. It was discussed why it only seems the USA is interested in the middle east when it should be the concern of all nations, it's not fun being a super power and having to pay for all this stuff. Costing us dearly.

Tamara- so what did you want him to do? to start war with Egyptians? I still don't get what you are saying because you say I don't believe they're all extremists/terrorists...but you can't deny that there are some who are....so what do you want him to do regarding them? even though no matter what you believe the majority are not and that's whom he is addressing....Do you think Egypt is not holding those terrorists down? Since the 9Os there has been only two attacks since then and everyone was caught. Egypt worked so hard -of course with ignorance to human rights- to control those ppl and infact did for the longest time.

But I will say this yes the view of America is distorted to most Egyptians and they were very happy to finally see America lending a hand rather than a hammer on the head! A lot of ppl are already changing towards America and yes it is very smart because extremists will have no where to go if this change keeps taking effect. I don't think making enemies will fix anything.

Egypt was the wrong place for him to be IMO, but besides that... look at what happened today, suicide bomber kills 30 in Pakistan that has nothing to do with the USA. Suicide bombers last year were constantly in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq over and over again. I feel like he apologizes for America for the wrong thing, which IMO he keeps apologizing that Americans have bad views about muslims. I dont think thats Americas problem. Extremist or terrorist muslims have made that problem for themselves and their own religion, we did start imagining those things up. And also IMO, I have been under the impression that alot of those countries do not like America bcz America supports Israel which technically is their number one enemy. So, would the moderate muslims befriend us if America gave up support for Israel? and even if that happened, the extremist or terrorist would still hate us.

Also another thought... Does the governments of any of those countries that have suicide bombers boldly get on tv or come to America to apologize for thier own peoples actions? Do any of those countries have thousands of their own people going to other countries helping feed the poor, or build orphans homes, or send troops out to help make peace.

One of Obama's big ideals is setting a good example, no matter what other countries choose to do. He did this in the closing of Guantanamo, among other things.

In my opinion, Obama didn't apologize as much as many expected him to, but stated the truth. We are not perfect either. This country has been involved in some pretty messed up things. It's time to be realistic. I love this country for the fact that we learn from these issues and grow and change as a democracy should.

Agreed, negative attention is brought upon Islam because of extremists who "give it a bad rap" so to speak. But if us, as Americans, were open enough to understand that groups of extremists that misinterpret the basic founding of their religion do NOT speak for an entire population, this scapegoating would not be an issue. As a whole, discrimination is wrong, period.

P.S. I am friends with Muslims... and none of them happen to be terrorists.

I don't want to get all nerdy on you but....

Terrorism is cross-cultural, global. In our culture, it is not prominent but in many it is. Not only in the middle east. For example, in my husband's country, Peru, there are terrorist groups in constant combat with their government.

Here's a quote from a great article that this reminded me of from the Political Psychology journal that I read in a PoliSci class - The Psychology of Terrorism

"...psychological explanations of terrorism were still immature, but he suggested an integrated theory in which individuals who are predisposed to engage in terrorism due to developmental factors find certain needs satisfied by joining underground groups." - in impoverished areas such as Afgahnistan, Iraq and even Peru - where the disparity between rich & poor is extreme, their basic needs (i.e. food, shelter, family security) can be met by joining such groups and so the logic behind it may be in many cases, just this.

So sorry for my rant, but I feel that in order to understand why and how Obama made his speech the way he did yesterday, we aught to dig a little deeper into the issues, that's all.

At any rate, it was a speech. It was a damn good speech too. And I amicably agree to disagree with some of you posters :innocent:
