Polygamy is not plural marriage, it's the ability of a man to take multiple wives. Please try harder.

Ditto --- that is not plural marriage, that is polygamy. Tres different, like Cleo said.

All of these involve patriarchal setups of multiple women being married to a single man (with diminished rights for the women)

Ok, what's the difference?

How about these definitions?

Definitions of Plural marriage on the Web:

What I have asked, is how such a marriage would work. What would any of the participants get out of such an arrangement?

Same as traditional marriage - a solid financial foundation (four people can buy a bigger house

than two couples), a stable loving relationship and environment in which to raise children.

You believe that would happen? The evidence seems to be that 2 people have a hard time making a marriage work, suddenly add two more people and the dynamic becomes ever more complicated and ever more difficult to maintain.

Two people have a hard time making a marriage work because monogamous marriages are unnatural. :D

Add two or more people and things will get easier to manage.

I see. Well, I'll certainly attempt to get my head round this possibility. I can see the financial advantages potentially...:D

Random quotes as to the definitions of polygamy really will not wash. You have cluttered this thread and not furthered the arguments one iota.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

:bonk: How narrow a view!!!! What if wives + husbands do not want to procreate???? Shame on you! Shame on you! :jest:

Nothing wrong with that.

WAIT. What if husband +2 and wive +4 want to have a baby, buth the other wives do not? How does that work

Same as a traditional marriage. What if your husband wants to have a baby and you don't?

You discuss it and decide how you want to proceed.

How can you not get it?

It means multiple men and women in a single "marriage" - not a marriage of multiple women centered around a single man.

How will you get that from your 3 wives and 2 husbands?

What if you want sex with wife #2 but you can't get any because Husband #1 is keeping her to himself and is nobbing her at every opportunity?

I'll let him have her and have sex with wife #1.

We're all friends, remember. It's not about competition.

Of course not. Or jealousy either. Its not as though there's such a thing as human nature.

If you're a jealous person and don't like the idea of sharing, then plural marriage is not for you - it's that simple.

It's not for everybody.

Plural marriage, with a multiplicity of 'partners' makes a nonsense out of the notion of marriage. There is no necessity to marry unless you wish to select a partner with whom to live and derive the mutual benefits from having that exclusive relationship.

Actually, marriage is really about property ownership :)

What if you want to live with multiple partners and "derive the mutual benefits from having that exclusive relationship"?

Property ownership and raising children. Which, let's face it, is easier when there are three or four "parents".

Have an affair or two I guess...

Affairs are not for me - I want exclusivity and commitment!

How will you get that from your 3 wives and 2 husbands?

What if you want sex with wife #2 but you can't get any because Husband #1 is keeping her to himself and is nobbing her at every opportunity?

Having lived in that environment for years (I was a hippie before I became a money grubbing facist), the polygamist or communal society becomes strangly monogamist, or bigamist, but in a modular sense. Partners get shuffled on an irregular basis, not nightly. I hear the same thing happens in retirement communities among the unmarried residents.

Funny thing... most still seem to think plural marriage and polygamy are the same thing.... this would include for the possibility of one (or more) woman having more than one husband. How would you like being husband #3?

Again, I would not enter a plural marriage; but have no problem with folks who would, or who de facto live as such; as long as they are all consenting adults.
