My favorite is when I hear stories of the know-it-all stay at home mommies, who have the nerve to tell a college educated teacher that they don't know what they are doing.

Do you know that parents now think it's okay to call universities and argue about their kids' grades? Can you imagine asking your mom to call your professor to demand you get a higher grade on your transcript??!!

10,000 parents will neglect, abuse, abandon, damage, torture, ridicule etc their kids and we will not here a single word about it.

Yes, and it's the teacher's job to be accountable, to recognize and report this as well... for his or her 120+ students.

So true. Teachers should be paid more :(

oh christ. the only degree easier to get than a teaching degree is a psychology degree. the avg teacher's starting salary is 35K in most areas, for 8 months work. the avg teacher's salary in penna is 65K, and still they fail to produce. if engineers could design $hit that didn't work for 65K a year i'd have to take a pay cut.

no thanks. i'll work 10 months a year and make more for doing something well.

That happened to a friend of mine who is a lecturer here. The parents actually scheduled a meeting and wanted to discuss why their child got a C when she deserved an A. One would think that is a no-brainer but in 2009 I guess not.

####### are parents thinking? seriously.

This attitude is why some many gen Y's are douche bags at work and do not have a bloody clue.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

I don't think it really factors into the point how many months a year a teacher works. Teachers have one of the most important jobs in our country (any country). It is there job to educate the next generation! That's important enough to me that I think they should get paid more.

I'm not saying that all of the teachers we have in the US are great teachers, but if they were paid better than maybe our quality of teachers would be better as well...

Anyway, off to work....teaching, but that's beside the point.

Teaching is actually one of the most mentally draining jobs in the country. I also doubt the $65k considering that even in my county Loudon, VA (aka highest earning county in the freakin United States) teachers don't get paid that much.

Our executives earn about 10 times what teachers earn yet are not even close to being as stressed.

That fails to take into account different types of teaching degrees. A junior high teacher probably requires less education than a college professor. On the other hand, a teacher in junior high has to deal with horrific children starting puberty, whereas a college professor teaches students who actually want to be there and learn.

As for psychology... well, a Bachelor's degree is just about worthless. Even a Master's degree won't get you very far. You'll need to obtain either a PhD or a PsyD. Getting a doctorate isn't easy, so if someone wants to be a professional psychologist, it takes a lot of work.
