After being interviewed by the school administration, the prospective teacher said "Let me see if I've got this right. You want me to go into that room with all those kids, correct their disruptive behavior, observe them for signs of abuse, monitor their dress habits, censor their T-shirt messages, and instill in them a love for learning.

You want me to check their backpacks for weapons, wage war on drugs and sexually transmitted diseases, and raise their sense of self esteem and personal pride. You want me to teach them patriotism and good citizenship, sportsmanship and fair play and how to register to vote, balance a checkbook, and apply for a job.

You want me to check their heads for lice, recognize signs of antisocial behavior, and make sure that they all pass the final exams.

You also want me to provide them with an equal education regardless of their handicaps, and communicate regularly with their parents in English, Spanish or any other language, by letter, telephone , newsletter, and report card. You want me to do all this with a piece of chalk, a blackboard, a bulletin board, a few books, a big smile, and a starting salary that qualifies me for food stamps.

You want me to do all this and then you tell me. . . I CAN'T PRAY?"

Yeah, but voluntary (usually silent) individual prayer is totally different from forced prayer that everyone must take part in.

I don't know how teachers do it. Their salaries are just a disgrace. Teaching is also one of the most stressful jobs out there. Just think of all the moronic parents they have to deal with, let alone the kids. I'd be in prison by now having knocked a few out.

Then again what do you expect from the ineffective and inefficient county / city based system, rather than a state based system. Just think of all the salaries we could save if we got rid of bureaucracy. I'm surprised Republicans are not pushing this since they hate government jobs, but I guess it goes against the states (county) rights that they love so so much. I know for us right wing conservatives back in AUS, consolidation is the aim of the game. AKA less bureaucrats; something 99% of conservative talk shows seem to preach.

The whole system is a joke. When I first heard that parents could come and influence the school or counties decisions I thought, what the hell are you talking about. In AUS, the state is what decides the curriculum and how things are run. No such thing as school board getting to call the shots. They hire professionals, for obvious reasons, to determine the best curriculum. Their test scores speaks for itself.

There are way to many chefs in the kitchen, so the teachers and students suffer. The good teachers are just pushed out and those left are burnt-out. My favorite is when I hear stories of the know-it-all stay at home mommies, who have the nerve to tell a college educated teacher that they don't know what they are doing.

I also like how one teacher blows up or does something wrong and the parents and media demand their execution. Yet between that incident to the next teacher blowout, 10,000 parents will neglect, abuse, abandon, damage, torture, ridicule etc their kids and we will not here a single word about it.
