I think it's because soccer is so plain. There's basically only one thing they do- try to kick a ball into a goal.

You are one of the many that dont know football (soccer) as its soooooooo much more than kicking a ball  ........Ever wondered why its called the beautiful game, you need to check out the skill involved with this game, skill played with feet & a ball only!!!

the things these players do that make the whole viewing audience GASP in amazement of the skill on the ball........:yes:

the footwork is really something to behold....also, the teamwork required for a well planned attack is just incredible.

I can't think anyone I know who likes sports who doesn't love it after being properly exposed to it

My SO has been in UK for going on 5 years now and has certainly developed a love of footy and rugby...

Not to mention all the other bits that consist of a good game of football,e.g a great precision pass, vision , good clean 50/50 tackles of which NO PADDING is involved just a great deal of sheer guts & skill!!

The problem is that most kids in the U.S. aren't exposed to soccer at a young age to take an interest in it. My daughter's 4th grade gym class did not play any soccer. My wife works at a neighborhood Summer camp and she tried to get the kids to play soccer and the kids (mostly black) said soccer sucks we want to play basketball.

dont see anything wrong with the post.. it's funny.. and I still can't understand why Americans in general don't like soccer.. although these last weeks in my store they have been watching the games, I guess they didn't know the rules.. but I explained them to the crew, and they seem to enjoy it more lol..

I think it's because soccer is so plain. There's basically only one thing they do- try to kick a ball into a goal.

In Baseball, they may sacrifice fly, hit a home run, steal a base, hit an RBI, make a double play, and more.

In American Football, they might make a pass, fumble, make an interception, kick a field goal, run for a touchdown, run a reverse option- plus they run the risk of being paralyzed. You also have so many players with clearly different roles. You have guys in sizes from 160 lbs to 350 lbs. I know there are defensive players and offensive players in soccer, but they all seem to be doing the same thing to me- kicking the ball.

Now, you can argue that hockey and basketball are about the same as soccer- and I agree. Hockey isn't really that popular in the U.S. It's only more popular because it's violent and fast. Basketball I would argue is more popular because there is much more scoring, and ties would never come down to who can make the most consequetive free throws.

Most sports bore the hell out of me:

Baseball - yaawn. Only fun when you're there in person.

Football - only fun if I'm watching it with my Dad, and the opposing team is winning (it's the purple face and the funny noises he makes! Heeeee!) Otherwise, boring.

Hockey - eh... only game I know of where the guys aren't all just running around playing with their balls.

Basketball - tedious. My ex would watch basketball, and I'd seriously just get sooo bored I'd fall asleep.

Soccer - Still pretty damn boring.

Seriously... sports is just guys playing with their balls, how the hell is that interesting?

i know some americans who really love soccer. they are even Liverpool fans!

the idiots who dont know anything but want to pretend like they do so they can impress a brit always seem to support.... man utd!

uh oh i can see someone nailing me for that one

Consider yourself nailed.

twice!

Oh good lord you three. This is a polite public forum. Shouldn't that sort of stuff be kept behind closed doors. What will the kids think?

I love football. Makes me wish I was young again so I can play, but alas and alack I am too old and tore-up. I dimly remember learning to play when I was a kid, but then they moved us away from that to field hockey. You want to see scarey? Try teams of hormonal, soon to be menstrual young girls with sticks running around with no concept of what they are doing. I do not think that sport lasted too long at my school.

Judge Judy rules!

I don't really like any sports but there is one thing that I just can't wrap my mind around about soccer... the other day I was watching a match... I was enjoying it too... it went on and on for a while at 1-1... the end comes and they just END THE GAME!!! How can you just throw up your hands at a tie and say OK it's over???

I thought the point to playing any game is that someone wins?

Well, the bigger picture is the rankings....and someone DOES win...

you get points for a win, and a point for a draw, and nowt for a loss...at the end of the season, there IS a clear winner

So it's about patience and not immediate results?

Ah ha, so that's why Americans don't like it

There's a Ricardo Arjona song called "Noticiero" ("Newscast") that's a political commentary mostly, but it was written about the time that soccer started to become big in the US, and it has a verse about that:

El fútbol gana terreno en los Estados Unidos

Quieren cambiar la estructura pa' que tenga sentido

Hay que agrandar las porterías

Y ocho tiempos fuera pa' vendernos porquerías

Soccer is gaining ground in the United States

They want to change the structure so it will make sense

The goals must be made larger

And eight time-outs to sell us junk
