Chicago swine flu death: New mom dies of flu a day after giving birth

Woman, 20, had other underlying medical conditions; baby is in neonatal ICU

By Carlos Sadovi | Tribune reporter

June 4, 2009

A Chicago woman became the fourth person in the state to die of the H1N1 swine flu a day after she gave birth, officials said Wednesday.

The latest death was a 20-year-old woman from Chicago who died Saturday at the University of Illinois Medical Center, said Sherri McGinnis Gonzalez, a hospital spokeswoman.

The woman was admitted to the hospital May 23 with flulike symptoms. Her condition quickly deteriorated, and her baby, a 27-week fetus, was delivered by Caesarean section on Friday, officials said.

The woman died the following day and was found to have pneumonia and swine flu, McGinnis Gonzalez said. The baby is being cared for in the hospital's neonatal intensive care unit, she said.

Health officials said that in addition to the latest death, three people -- a 22-year-old Chicago man, a northwest suburban Cook County woman and a 42-year-old Kane County man -- have died of swine flu. All four who died had other underlying medical conditions, officials said.

There are 1,268 confirmed swine flu cases in Illinois, officials said. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Web site lists 11,054 confirmed and probable cases in the U.S.

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

statistical probability begs a question.

when it is asked, it is removed for fear of being answered in the affirmative.

if the answer had been given, enough times, perhaps it would have brought "change".

change is not to be feared if it is beneficial to the organism by eliminating illness.

not even if the change involves a negative impact on the parasite that bring illness to the organism.

Caitlin Treat Huber, 20, was admitted to the hospital May 23 suffering from influenza-like symptoms, UIC officials said Wednesday. She was diagnosed with pneumonia and the swine flu virus, formally called H1N1.

Doctors successfully delivered Huber's premature infant by cesarean section May 29, and Huber died at 12:03 p.m. the next day, two days after the first birthday of her older daughter, Annalycia Huber.

"She was always healthy and strong. With the pregnancy, it was just too much," Huber's father, Charles Huber, said after a memorial service at Holy Cross/Immaculate Heart of Mary 4541 S. Wood, on Wednesday.

Huber's was the second Chicago flu virus-related death.

She moved to Chicago about nine months ago from Nebraska.

Huber was a 2007 graduate of Boys Town High School in Omaha, Neb., where she was mayor and battalion commander of the JROTC.

probability is an inexact science, if the variables are increased to a high enough degree.
