Egg Donation

This immigration/moving stuff is getting expensive, and I'm getting a bit desperate for ideas to generate extra cash to visit my Brazilian. So I sent my picture, my SAT scores and IQ, a health questionnaire, some statements about my general disposition, etc. into this fertility company that pays women $10,000-12,000 for their eggs. They have reviewed my file and decided they'd like to harvest the fruit of my womb, but I'm not decided on whether or not I want to do it.

It seems to involve shots, hormones, doctor visits, and signing my eggs over to someone else (not much of a problem for me). BUT it also involves 10,000 dollars, and seems to be a month-long commitment at most.

Anyone know anyone who did it? Regrets it? Thought it was a good idea?

This seems to be an increasingly popular way for young female ivy-leaguers to get some cash.

PS I am also slightly bothered by the genetic engineering aspect of the whole thing... I wonder what kind of people want their egg donor to specifically have gotten a certain SAT score (largely influenced by upbringing, background, etc.) and have certain physical features (apparently my blondeness/Jewishness makes me a catch) and even be of a certain level of breeding (as though this were written into my genetic code). On the other hand, I would be happy to help some childless couple become parents, and I don't feel any particular ownership over my eggs or see them as "my future children."

Thoughts?

I have never done it.....but I guess it comes down to your own personal ethics, esp concerning the whole 'genetic engineering' aspect...you have pretty much cover all the points you need to think about, would I do it if it was me? yeh, I guess I would...it is just a month out of your life...

Good luck on whatever you decide

I know a girl who donated her eggs three times now. THe third time she had major problems giving herself the injections everyday due to bruises on her belly. After the donation she felt sick for days but she would do it again she said. She lives in VA and the hospital pays her 6000 bucks right after the surgery. I have considered it but I wont do it before I have children myself.

I would do it if I could, but not for the money - for the idea of giving someone a chance to have kids who otherwise cannot - doesn't mean I would turn down money tho but that wouldn't be *my* driving reason to do it (whatever anyone else does is between them and their conscience, Im just saying what *I* would do) - I think its a wonderful gift tho

I like the idea of helping somebody else... My parents couldn't have children (they were told) and they were considering adoption, this was 28 years ago, so this technology had not been developed yet, I think they would have done it, if they had the choice... I know just how desperate they were, and I know how happy they are to have had me... I also know how happy we would've all been if they had been able to have more kids... I guess that that was a one-off shot... Can't imagine how would I feel if I was told I can't have children!

I dont think i could imagine having a child out there that i did not know.

I think that comes down to having my daughter (she is 4)....and imagining not knowing where she was.

But thats just me, good luck in your choice.

I've thought about it before. I had the initial reaction of "but those would be MY children!" After thinking more about it, they might have some of my genetic material, but they wouldn't be my children.

I wouldn't conceive or carry them. I wouldn't be the one to go through the pain of delivery, or wake up every two hours to feed them. I wont be the one to change their diapers or rush them to the bathroom during potty training. I wont be the one to hold them when they cried, whether that was becuase of a bruise or a broken heart. I wouldn't be their mother. That would be the woman the donated eggs were given to.

I'm not using them. I've had two kids, and I'm pretty much done. The rest of these eggs are just being flushed from my uterus one at a time every month. May as well give them to someone who really would love a child, and be able to provide for that child.

Only, at 28, I'm probably too old. I'd have to look into it a bit more.

Hey Alexa if you're comfortable with the idea and sure you won't regret later go for it. Just be sure first that in the future you won't regret it and want to know or find your kids. Good luck on your decision (F)
