Hi all. We just got married! And I am going to petition for my wife for a CR-1 visa.

My first question is should I (or do I have to) file my taxes as married?

My second question is if I go that route which option should I take? file together or file separately? Other than the paperwork (filing together is more work), are there any benefits?

Suppose that I'm only going to send a couple hundred dollars a month... We have no kids. She can support herself. Also, my wife has never been a US resident -- she would need to file for the special tax ID.

If your married , yes you need to file as married, either as Joint or married and seperate. Call the IRS to get the info and tax consequences for either option.
