I am getting ready to book a ticket for my wife and I to go to Thailand, Do I book with her new married name? or the name that is on her passport? We are using an AP to travel. She has a drivers License with my last name, but her passport is still Thai with her Thai name...

Thanks, I assume we should change her passport when we get there? We haven't married Thai yet so we should do that first...

It depends..

I dont change my name in Thailand - I even recognize as still single in Thailand  We might do it later but I dont really see any benefit of doing it since I'm here. We might do it when we plan on going back.. and that's far far away...

but yea.. if you want to change her passport you need to get married in Thailand first.

Really? We didn't have to go thru this since we married in Thailand and Rin changed her ID and passport there. But based on the consulate webpage here, I thought it was possible to change it once married in the USA.

Looks like lots of paperwork! Just what everyone wants - more paperwork!

I would think you would want to use the name that the AP came in, and if it is the married name bring along the marriage certificate to verify the name difference between the passport and the AP.

sorry - it should have been " your marriage needs to be recognize by The Thai government first" (only for changing last name thru marraige) - more paper work though.. so I just didnt bother with it.

I'm not so sure. Some how they more likely to check your name on the ticket to match your passport or government issue id. I dont know if the AP have picture in it? Even with the green card - it's not the thing that internatially recognize.. I dont know how to explain but I still think it make a lot more sense to use the name that match your passport when you travel across the country.

As Anya first posted, you need to use the name in the passport, because that is your official travel document. Whether she was married or not, or traveling with anyone else, she would still use her passport. As for returning to the US, that's when you need to show the AP along with a valid passport.

So when you get to immigration it will not matter that the name on the passport is different from the name on the AP?

No, because she will already be in the system. That's why Anya suggested carrying the marriage certificate, but has never been asked for it.

It's no different traveling on a GC. The passport has one name, the GC has another, but the tickets always need to match the passport.

I heard a story (this was PRE - 9-11) where an American woman named Mary flew from NY to California

with her husband and used her nickname (Janet) on the outgoing flight. When it came time for the return flight,

she was denied boarding because of the name difference and had to buy ANOTHER ticket using the name

on her drivers license, Mary.

You can't go wrong when using the name on your passport. That's the definitive ID for international travel.

Even if your drivers license has your married name, you have to use your passport.
