Same Sex Immigration

Please keep this in the Canada thread as I'm always curious to hear that viewpoint since Canada seems to be more liberal in most cases.

I read this article and I seriously have trouble believing sometimes that it's 2009 and these issues are still coming up. Every couple in this article has a point except for the Dutch illegal immigrant, yet we still have people trying to defend "traditional" marriage. I always wonder if these people ever actually studied marriage and realize what it was actually first based on. Land, animals, food, money, not love. Now this all powerful "traditional" marriage is supposed to be so special and deserve to need defending even though 50% of those precious marriages end in divorce. I just can't understand people caring about how other people live their lives *sigh*

It really amazes me that I should somehow have a say in how you or someone else lives their life and who they marry. If it's just based on what sex someone is, why not further it to say that I should have a say if my brother only marries someone I find attractive or I see is fit as a wife for him? So pathetic that these issues don't seem to ever go away.

They will never go away, there will always be bigotry. It's so sad. It doesn't affect you, so why do you care? (You being the ones against it) how does it affect you in any way who someone marries? I mean look what happened in Cali just last week, what a shame. We have a long way to go in equality

I am so hopeful that the bill passes in Congress, but I am justifiably pessimistic that it will. I hate that same sex couples can't sponsor their partners. :(

I really don't think it's going to pass since there's two types of bigotry being fought, homosexuality and immigration. A bill that was presented for most states failed to pass to even allow same sex couples to marriage, let alone then having to allow them to immigrate. Before I met my wife I never really thought of immigration that much and didn't believe half the stories I was told until I saw them with my own eyes. In school I was always taught how people moved to America to escape persecution and start a new country that was based on ideals and worth. Somewhere along the line this country forgot that we're made up of 99% immigrants and just because we happened to immigrate earlier it's no reason to feel better than someone else that's just doing so now.

The traditional marriage argument really touched home when I tried to discuss it once with my parents and I was shocked to find out they actually agreed with the ban. I'm only 28 years old and my parents are in their late 50s now but I never would've thought that two people that I've always found to be incredibly loving and logical would have a belief like that.

California always claims to be the most liberal and forward-thinking state as well, I couldn't believe when it was banned the first time, let alone how overwhelming the defeat was.

I don't understand why same sex couples cannot marry and I don't understand why they cannot have their foreign partner immigrate to the U.S.

There is a lot of discrimination in this world, so I suppose it's not really surprising.

A lot of people say that homosexuality is not a choice, that you are born that way - therefore you should be given equal opportunity.

I believe that people are born homosexual - but, taking it even one step further, if I didn't believe that, if I believed it was a choice (and perhaps for some people it is) - they still deserve equal treatment. Who they chose to love, sleep with, marry - is none of my business.

That's part of the problem - it really is none of anyone else's business but a lot of people who are not involved think it is their business and keep sticking their noses into it.

I agree, homosexuality is a part of 'nature' not 'nurture' and same sex couples should have equal rights under the law as heterosexual couples, whether it is immigration, or family based benefits or marriage. It is no one else's business except theirs and everyone else should just keep out. I think it will be a while before it happens to the degree it needs to here in the US but I am heartened that it is beginning to happen - something I honestly didn't expect to see here in the US.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

:).. I guess I don't see the "drama" that everyone else sees in all of this.. for me it's going to follow suit if you legalize same sex marriage than you'll have to update immigration laws no?

Regardless of how you feel about the issue, I think logic says that if one is legalized, the other would logically follow suit no?

Well, I know little of State vs Federal law here (and i'm good with that) - i'm just thinking since same sex marriage seems to be a State thing and immigration is Federal - in theory same sex immigration could be approved without the other happening.

Ideally there would be both, of course.

That's what I was thinking, the same sex marriage laws being passed are state wide, the feds don't recognize it. So even if you live in say Iowa, where same sex marriage is now legal, you cannot sponor a foreign spouse as USCIS would not recognize it.

One step at a time, I guess. First, all state have to recognize it. Some laws have to grow to be a reflection of the time. Something that applied in the 1920s, may not be appropriate in 2009. I think we can all agree that same sex marriage is totally up to any one who wants to get into that process. Who am I to judge? I only want people to be happy. Think of how much more happiness we would have in this world if we allowed people to marry who ever and do whatever they wanted in regards to their own sexual orientation?

Being gay is now celebrated in so many ways, even through mainstream media. The laws should reflect 2009. It's a shame that so many people still see it like it's wrong. Like Jill says, it doesn't affect you or I so why care?

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

Well I think people that are against the idea of same sex marriage think that it does affect them directly - they believe it somehow demeans the spirit of 'marriage'.

But - no matter what the issue is, there is a busybody to fill that roll.
