birth certificate translation from Quebec

Hi everybody,

I am calling a few translators today and just wanted to make sure what I am asking them is right. I need the translation to be certified but does it also have to be notarized? I have like 7 originals of my birth certificate because I got paranoid just in case I needed to be handing them out. :)

I'm also stopping by the police station today to see if they can give me my RCMP nationwide criminal check. Hopefully that can be done right on the spot and won't take too long.

Hi dome,

I'm not sure what the requirements are for the K1 birth certificate - however for the police check, just wanted to mention that it should say that the Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) or the national criminal records repository was searched using the applicant’s name and date of birth

Cool, thank you for letting me know about the police certificate. I will mention that at the police station.

On my document about the birth certificate it states: All certificates not in English must be accompanied by certified translations into English. Translations must be by a competent tranlator and sworn to him before a notary.

That "sworn to him before a notary" thing is throwing me off.

7 originals?!! You're hilarious.

I thought I saw a post in here recently saying the BC didn't have to be translated because the Consulate was in Montreal. Maybe do a search. In the meantime, I'll try and find it.

There is this stuff from the State Department, regarding documents the applicant has to submit for immigrant visas, however it's for immigrant visas - so i'm not sure if it applies?: link

Translation Requirements

All documents not in English, or in the official language of the country in which application for a visa is being made, must be accompanied by certified translations.

The translation must include a statement signed by the translator that states that the:

Translation is accurate, and

Translator is competent to translate.

guess i was lucky..when i ordered mine last october they came to me in English.

On the Immigrant visa Montreal supplement instructions it just says that birth certificates have to be from Etat Civil, i do not see any specifics as to english. But better safe then sorry i imagine.

AHAHAHAHA Krikit you are hilarious.....Nope just sticking with 2 copies...i just called a translator and she said she'd charge me 35$ for 2 certified copies with her seal. She did inform me however that they will not be notarized (obviously as she's not a notary) and I don't think i will get them notarized. Certified seems to be ok as I've read in other people's posts. Hope I'm not wrong on that.

RCMP does the Canada-wide police check while you wait. Took about 15 minutes all told for me.

***Don't forget to bring a copy of your NOA proving you're approved/in the process. They specifically asked me for that ***

Good lucK! :)

OH NO! I don't have the copy of the NOA2. My fiance didn't scan it and send it to me yet. I only have the letter from the Consulate with my case number and the whole packet 3. Will that be ok?

They don't keep the originals at Montreal and you just need to provide a copy for the AOS. One should be fine, but I would probably get 19 if I were you. :hehe:

I think Moosker must have had a wacko person doing the check - they don't normally ask for proof - you are entitled to get a criminal records check if you want one.

My husband didn't have to show his NOA2 for his police check. Thank goodness, because I haven't sent him a copy. :-P So then the bc translation only has to be certified, but not notarizied? Is that right?

Thats what I'm trying to figure out Childress. I'm just going to get 2 certified copies from the translator and go with that and my original birth certificate as well. I was looking at old posts from people on this same subject and some got it notarized but others did not and were fine just having certified copies.
