Some of us may be no-good bellyaching librulz, but we're part of that great capitalist private sector y'all republikans are so enamored with.

There's some irony in passing Democrats in unemployment lines and yelling, "Get a freakin' job you losers." Welcome to Obama's America where the only growth industry is government. Hey, it's what you guys voted for so thanks for the cash and job security.

You were a government-employed parasite well before Obama was elected.

Now I'm self-employed and have to do quarterly payments and pay the full social security. *fist shake*

 My sister is too but some accountant has convinced her she doesn't have to do any of that. I am still trying to convince her she does, and it's already June.

Eeek. Well, as I learned from experience, if you end up owing a buttload at the end of the year, the IRS is always glad to work with you.

Hubby's taking furlough.. 3 days between now and end of summer.. they are doing them around a long weekend though and taking out an hour of pay off every paycheck for employees to "pay for" their own time off..

I asked him if he could just take them as personal days (he has 10 a year or some obscene amount) and he said he couldn't.. they HAD to take them as days off without pay.. figure that one out!]

Should say hubby works in the private sector..

Sounds great! Vacation, baby!

The question that immediately comes to mind here is this: If the state can function with the staff now working 18 out of 21 days, doesn't that really suggest that they are overstaffed by that 14% to begin with? Not trying to step on any toes here but I think the argument can very well be made.

Except we don't know yet what isn't getting done - we haven't had the chance to find out the ramifications yet of the furloughs. Are they really functioning or are they just appearing to function and we haven't yet seen the end result. It might be like building a house - you shortchange on the foundation and it all looks good - until it comes crashing down around you.

This is where people get creative. Over the last three years, I have seen my staff reduced by 27%. Workload increased slightly over the same time period - up 5%-7%. And guess what? We're doing a better job today than we have done 3 years ago. We made a number of changes to our processes and workflows and did a few very minor system upgrades. As a result, we're in better shape today than we've ever been. While I am not employed by the government, I tend to think that there are smart and creative people in that area, too.

We just finished up a two week shutdown at Cat. I was able to work in another building so it didn't effect me. Many others were also farmed out to other buildings and plants so very few of us were really out of work. I have been getting a ton of overtime as of late. We are severely under staffed and those of us left are working our tails off to keep up. The good news is that Cat says things will be picking up after this shut down and the company we work for is starting to hire back some of the laid off workers. It is still early but it looks like things are getting better at my job. I will probably quit my second job next week. It is starting to interfere with my regular jobs overtime requests. Luz is working a new job and is getting 90 - 100 hour 2 week checks. For more money than her old job also. We have caught up on all our bills and have a months pay in the bank for emergencies. Finally some light at the end of the tunnel.
