I'm a social worker (BSW) and I hope to pursue that same sacrrer in Albany. However, i was also thinking about goping back to school to get my Master's, but with 2 babies, I doubt it will happen....I contacted SUNY Albany to see if I could take some non-degree classes, turns out that I can so I might do that just to learn more about the social services in NY state and the capital region.

I'm in the Coast Guard. Since I've fresh out of bootcamp, I don't have a "rate" (profession in Coast Guardianese) yet, but will be going to my 9 week training school in a few months to become a Marine Science Technician.

My husband is going to school for a Cyber Crime technology degree, and if all goes well, will be finished in about 2 years.

To the OP, I've always wanted to try out dog grooming!!! I was thinking of doing it part time, (more for the fun than the money,) just because I love animals so much. Maybe you could look into Veterinarian school or something like opening up a kennel (though that would be noisier than dog grooming, hehe,) if you want to stick with working with animals.

I think i've changed careers at least half dozen times. Right out of high school, I was a lifeguard. It paid well, about $24/hr. and there was tons of overtime. That however was highly seasonal so after 6 months, I was low man on the totem pole and got laid off. So I went to university. During my senior year, my sister got me a job working for the company that she was working for. I was studying economcis and marketing in uni and this was a job in entertainment marketing, so I thought it was all golden. Going to clubs and bars 6 nights a week as part of my job was fun. But this was the late 90's and the internet business bubble popped. Luckily I graduated. Turns out I hate marketing and it's nothing like what you learn about in school..... it's far more tedious. So I moved on to accounting. That was fine for a while, because it paid well. But at the end of the day, I was shifting numbers around and felt that I wasn't contributing anything to the world. So I threw myself into teaching. I taught special education children, primary grades (4-5). I was so excited for about 3 months.... thats when you really learn that it's not just you teaching the kids. You have administrators, and meetings, and psychotic parents who are never satisfied with the progression of their child. I seriously had one child who had downs syndrome and his parents requested a meeting with my principal and me. They were worried about their sons progression in math. They seriously thought he should be doing more advanced coursework on a track to be in algebra by 7th grade. So I finished out my 2 year contract and did what every other frustrated, burned out person would do.... I got a government job. I didn't think i'd like it, but I really do now. Despite the wondertard in the next office (Theresa).

OK, so lately I've been thinking of changing careers. Not completly 100% on it. I'm a dog groomer right now. It does pay well, which is why I'm a little hesitant to change. However it does take a toll on your body(wrists, back!, hearing).

I don't know what I want to do if anything else at all, but I just wanted to see what you guys do for a living. I figured that my opportunity to change would be best after I move over. Since I can't work for X amount of months, I might go to school.

Share if you like!

I retired in Canada, and came here thinking I wanted to do something completely different. I decided however, with my husband's blessings that I wouldn't work. However I was excited about doing something completely different, and right now I'm a volunteer. I know that a lot of people aren't as fortunate as me being able to do something like this, but I think it's great when people get the opportunity to change careers and do something different! Moving to a different country and having new beginnings is a great time to do this.

Best of luck in whatever you decide to do! Just make sure that whatever you choose to do, it's something you love.

Yes Carla! You speak such wisdom. Loving what you do is the most important thing because you have to wake up every day and face it. I am a true believer in putting my heart into everything I do and when I don't have any heart left for it, I know it's time to move on.

As of right now, I am doing SFA and not at all happy about it. Actually that's not 100% true... I just started doing some consulting work for a company that is an intermediary for international theaters and the authors of the plays they wish to produce. That's only one day per week though, so I am furiously looking for a full time job as an accountant or auditor. The problem is that I have worked for the federal government ever since graduating university, so while I have some pretty specialized and unique skills and knowledge (tax investigations), what I know is really only useful in a similar position and citizenship is required for any federal government job that I have found here. This puts me in the position of basically being right out of university with no experience only all the stuff I learned there is 12 years behind me. At this point I am ready to take a job at the local supermarket or something

Thank you, Sprailenes. You just gave me the perfect words to push me to finally quit my job as a part time teller. My bosses called me in today for "teller coaching" since I have not met the sales goals for 2 quarters and they need me to "step-up" and be more aggressive in marketing. I just listened to their rambling and said yes to everything they said about me. Truth is, I've been thinking of quitting for sometime since I am not happy with my job, don't look forward to going to work every single time, or in other words, "I don't have any heart left for it". So, thank you for your words of wisdom. I think it's really time to move on . . .

Sprailenes actually pushed me to finally quit my job!

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

we were both very lucky to find better jobs two weeks later though.

Ohhh nooo!! I'd never quit this job unless I was fired or I got a better offer!

im a graphic designer, started my own small company when i was about 15 decided to go to college so that i could do more to build it my last BA will be two years from now for creative writing, the music world is kind of meat an potatoes until i have everything i need but my goal is to do more than business cards, labels for clothing, cds, and the needs of clubs and groups for posters and hand outs.

plus many are flaky about paying on time.

things started picking up for me when i landed a contract for the state of Oregon, this is more along the lines of what i wanted to pursue. The web design and up keep are kind of boring but it helps get me to where i want to be.

i have stated implementing advertisement for some of my clients that involve media commercials.

i love my work, i took a big hit about a year or so ago when the economy started going down but with what im adding to my work now it will be on top after a few more years and a lot of hard work.
