As a nurse, i hate readign Doctors orders (nothign to to with above mentioned job) as the majority of the time you can't read them! So you ask another nurses what they think it is,lol or you call the Dr up!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Aw..well I've got no experience in that!

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

Amanda - Have you ever considered going to back to school for a certificate in publishing/editing? I know the market isn't great right now, but doing a grad certificate in PR was how I got my break into the business for sure...

I should add that I'm now unemployed as part of the K1 process and I could seriously get used to this! I know the feeling will wear off eventually... but going from a high stress job to no stress is pretty heavenly.

Amanda didn't you say you could go to school for free as long as your working there? I mean I would try doing that. Turn that negative into a positive. :)

I can. But any masters is at least 2 years if you do it full time. I'd be looking at being in school for the next 4 or 5 years. I'm not sure if I want to stay here for that long as of now, you know?

Plus, I've still would have to write a bunch of tests to get in at this school too.

We will see.

I don't think they offer an editing certificate at this school. That would be cool, though, Jen.

. I'm working on a medical transcription course so I can eventually work from home in my PJ's and not have to deal with people much at all.

Whats this all about. I'm interested to know!

I'm taking a course through Career Step. Basically you transcribe doctors dictation on operations, clinic visits etc. While there is quite a bit of medical lingo you need to learn, it doesn't take long to figure out new words based on basic root words. I'm at an advantage as having grown up in Brampton, the 'English as a 2nd language' folks sound perfectly normal to me. :) Once I've graduated and am employed, I'll be working from home. Of course, it is performance based, so once you get the swing of things, there is pretty good money to be made.

When i was in the cdn Navy, on some of our long deployments (over 3 months) they actually had a Prof from the U of Victoria come onboard and teach!! pretty cool.

That's true. But, you could always take 1 class now for free at the school you work at (I'm sure you could pass the tests) and then if you ended leaving, just have the credits transferred to a different school.

I know NYU has a couple good continuing education classes in the jounalism/publishing space, but I'm sure they are pricey.

You know what else might be looking into, that online University, the University of Pheonix or something like that. My friend is taking her Master's through there. She works in Education as a teacher and is taking the courses to be a Principal. Not sure what the cost is like though. I know it's hard to do this stuff with bills to pay, but you are still so young, even if it did take you 6, 7 or even 8 years, you would still be young when you were finished! I've been thinking about going back to school in maybe 5 years or so. I'd like to go back and get a Masters in Sociology, even though it would be pretty useless. I'd like to eventually teach classes at a College level in Sociology or Public Relations...

I'm a high school guidance counselor (master's degree) and it drives me nuts telling the students about amazing careers when I feel stuck in mine!

I want to be an OB/GYN or a nurse practitioner.

I'm a mom of 2 young girls so who knows when/if I will ever have the chance to go back to school.

I don't think so---unreadable writing would prob do more damage than good!! As a RN on a unit, one gets used to a Doctor and gets used to what drugs and orders a certain patient is going to get. I have been told its a skill one will adapt to,lol But as a new RN, you look at these squiggly lines, and you just have to shake ur head. Soem hospitals are going to all electronic orders, which would be super, no more guessing.

Yeah my old doc in Oakville went to electronic RX, no more handwriting. It made it much easier for me and the pharmacist to read!

You know...I'm kinda interested in looking into that myself!! Wish I knew about it here first before now..but only just heard about it recently. I think I can type fast enough..several online typing tests to be found, and so far my highest is at 47 w/p/m. Not real fast as some jobs go, but hopefully fast enough for this. I would LOVE to do this from home, and you can certainly control how busy you want to be.

OOPPPS forgot to add, I'm currently working for Curves for Women. I love that job too, so if I look into taking the course for transcriber, I'd love to be able to keep working for Curves a couple days a week. One never knows. The girl in SC asked if I'd be interested in staying with the company when I move... ^_^

I actually got my degree in computer programming with a minor in math but the tech jobs in the Southeast Michigan area are pretty much full as everyone who's got em wouldn't give them up for anything LOL. I started at a bank 5 years ago at an entry level position and now I'm the head of my department's technical needs as a project manager and also got a lot of experience with answering underwriting questions for mortgage loans. Not the most cemented industry right now but our bank didn't get involved with the sub-prime loans so we're actually doing pretty well :)

My wife is in graphic design now but before she moved to Michigan she was working at various newspapers in the Windsor area. She was the head advertising designer for the Amherstberg Echo, a little paper in a small town but man was the scenery around there nice. She did that for a year and then got a job down here within a few months doing printing and design for a company.

Good luck!

My wife has been back since June 5, 2007. Now we're just livin' man, L I V I N :)
