OK, so lately I've been thinking of changing careers. Not completly 100% on it. I'm a dog groomer right now. It does pay well, which is why I'm a little hesitant to change. However it does take a toll on your body(wrists, back!, hearing).

I don't know what I want to do if anything else at all, but I just wanted to see what you guys do for a living. I figured that my opportunity to change would be best after I move over. Since I can't work for X amount of months, I might go to school.

I had no clue on what to do when I moved here. Took my EMT basic course and enjoyed that, so figured I would go the paramedic route. But then seeign what RN's do in the ER, change of plans, and just recently graduated with my associates degree

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

There was a thread just like this a few weeks ago..or am I having dejavu? I couldn't find it! I remember answering that currently I am working in Social Services and plan to work in the field in the U.S. too, but right now I am open to other opportunities as well because I am going to be taking a big pay drop from what working in Social Services pays here in Canada than in the U.S. Maybe if I go back to school and get my MSW the pay difference wouldn't be as bad, but again I am not entirely sure that is the route for me. If I did get my MSW I would love to work in the military as a civilian, but again not sure how that works, maybe being the spouse of a member helps, because I am not a USC and sometimes that is a requirement to work on a military installation.

You're right, there is a career somewhere Minnie! But no hard im starting a new one.

I work in public relations. And no, I don't just plan fabulous parties and such like Samantha on SATC! haha! I specialize in business2business technology PR - and I prefer an agency setting. It's fast-paced and intense, but I love what I do. PR is a huge mix of writing, pitching news stories, media training execs to be on camera or do phone interviews, event planning (mostly press events) and corporate branding and strategy. In the technology world, we're also always launching new products and services. It can be very demanding, but also very very satisfying seeing a client in print!

Since I never posted on the last one, I suppose I will here.

I'm a technical project manager at a trading firm. Which means I'm responsible for delivering the internal IT applications, systems, and market data, to the traders who make all our firm's MONEY and pay our salaries. We are always on the lookout for experienced and bright software folks, so if you know of anyone in the Chicago area, PM me.

I've been involved in IT for financial services and trading firms for about 10 years now, in the US and in Israel.

Before that I was a software developer in Canada at Nortel in Brampton & Mississauga for much of the 90s, and also at IBM in Israel, and at another firm in the US.

I'm cool for a living.

No, seriously.

It's a tough job but someone's gotta do it.

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

I'm been thinking about getting into that industry myself. Would you provide training for a nominal fee?

I just finished university. Basically I have no career path and I'm lost in life.

The joys of working within a small business as the only actual employee.

I guess I'm lucky in the fact that, when I head on down to Florida, I'm somewhat diverse in what I know. Just looking for something that will supplement his salary, though.

I was an electronic technician for 13 years in high-end home audio video products.

Unfortunately, as the electronic market slowly but surely went down the hill, I had to do something about my career. I loved my job so much, but realistically speaking I just could not sit there waiting to get laid off and not being able to find a job anymore, or still do my job but for a ridiculous salary.

But I always had a second passion, Computers! Curious as I am, I started spending a lot of time learning, servicing and building computers and did this for years as a hobby. However what I like the most about computers is programming. As I knew I had to switch careers, I started with what could get me into the computer world. So now I am working as IT support for a huge company .. not exactly what I like the most in computers but I do learn a lot of stuff :) however, I perfectly know that I do not want to do this forever. I plan on working as a programmer ... just need the right timing to complete the switch :D

Few are those who see with their own eyes and feel with their own hearts.

The fee is pretty high. I had just finished university when I moved here to the US so really had no idea of what I wanted to do so being cool..well..it was a given.

No..seriously though..I wanted to be an editor really bad and I had some experience as well. I applied to a bazzillion jobs and only got one call back for an editors job. It was for a dental magazine. They didn't think I had enough experience in the dental field to do it. (weird?)

Any way, I realized that even with living close to NYC, my editor's dream was probably slim to none. They weren't willing to give me a chance even with some experience and a degree in english literature and language.

So, i went back to my old friend transportation.

before I moved to America, I worked with professional hockey players. Not much call for that down here in Louisiana so I am currently working PT reception etc. at my vet clinic where most of my sorry salary goes back to them for care and food for the hounds. I'm working on a medical transcription course so I can eventually work from home in my PJ's and not have to deal with people much at all. People in general are overrated. ;)
