has anyone filed a I-130 for a stepchild?

I'm planning on doing this...but...not anytime soon.

KK, what are your reasons for waiting? and for anyone else with stepchildren in jamaica, what are your reasons for waiting? i suppose everyone has their own personal circumstances...just curious to see everyone's feelings on the subject. for me, i wanted to make sure my husband got situated here which he has done and we we were able to buy a house to accomodate another child which we have also done...not to mention the expense of it all.

Ummm waiting on husband to finish school, get drivers license, and get a job. There is really big rush on our end.

My husband has a great relationship with his daughter (with a little bit of my push). She is 9 and we have been together since she was 2. I have a good relationship with her as well...but then again..i haven't lived with her..lol.

Ideally, we would want her to spend summer here...but unless she gets a visitors visa...we only have the other option.

1luv.totally know what ur saying..i didnt try to hide mine because we talked about it while he was in ja..all during making plans for the wedding and visiting and such..just be honest even his money cant make a dent in ur debt u must still be open with it..this also teaches them about credit and such..sorry babes..

How's everybody? I just wanted to peak in and let you know that AW and I had our interview last week and we were approved. Sorry for the delay in getting the word out -- my phone was acting up and stopped working the day of the interview so I couldn't text Shemmy liked I promised. I'll write more details about the interview in my timeline, but it was a lot of waiting around, but the interview itself went by so fast that I had to ask the women who interviewed us if she could repeat our approval -- I wanted to make sure I heard her correctly!

thanks roxie. that post wasn't much help. my questions have to do with the embassy part of it so I need someone from jamaica who has done it. from the research that I have done every country's requirements at the embassy stage are slightly different when it comes to the paperwork needed to show legal custody of the child....some need an actual court order and others will accept a notarized letter from the bio parent giving permission for the child to leave the country. i'll PM Jengles. I suppose I could call the embassy directly and ask....anyone know the number I could call to get such info?

Finesse - we didn't have either of these papers for A's son's interview last week and it was fine. They asked no questions whatsoever about his mother.

also, the dna test part. some cases get through without a dna test being required. not sure how they determine which cases require a dna test and which don't. if a dna test is required in our case (which I am anticipating it will be), does my husband have to go to jamaica to do it? i see all these ads for immigration dna testing where it is possible for my husband to go to a lab here and his daughter go to a lab in jamaica and they mail the info between the two....but at a cost of around $600+ after shipping and lab fees. just want to be prepared for this monster we call immmigration! i have a headache already...

It depends on when his name was added to the birth certificate. If it was shortly after she was born you will ok, but if there was a delay then they may require it. You won't know until the interview if that's the case.

Nat, according to IOG's list you are number 12 in line for a K1 visa, I see that VT on an average has been approving 5 K1's. So, it liooks as if your approval will be received sometimes within the next 2 to 3 weeks. The question is are you'll ready, because with a K1, the process moves very quickly after it is at the embassy.

If I were you, I would be setting up to put everthing in place to get the police cert, completion of the Ds-230 with his signature on it, passport photo's for the medical, preparing for the medical. etc. letter from employer, tax information..etc

As far as being ready, not only do we have all the paperwork filled out for the interview, I've already filled out as much of the AOS paperwork as possible!

And I had him get a letter from his employer AND high school certificate, just in case those are needed once he gets here. He does need to get the rest of the passport pics, though... I think 10 more (4 for medical, 6 for interview), but that might be too many.
