I would look into it - I know that Air JA has a program where they will escort the child, even through the immigration -

Found the link:

http://airjamaica.com/minors.aspx

It's a $100 fee to the US - I would check Jet Blue too - As long as he was on a direct flight, I would think he would be okay.

Thanks - I checked AJ before about it. I'm thinking it would be best for him to fly that because it's mostly Jamaicans on the plane so he would be more in his comfort zone. But Jetblue has Directv on each seat - lol!

T LOVES JetBlue and those TVs. She really thinks she is the ish when she flies alone.

:ot: I need some opinions - Anthony and I have been discussing Jr flying here (WHEN he ever gets that visa). I was planning on going down to get him, but A says that he can/will fly here by himself - said it makes no sense in spending that extra money (which we don't really have) for my ticket. He is 11 so definitely not a baby, but has never flown before - let alone left Jamaica.

And of course on the Today show this morning there was a story about Continential Airlines sending an 8 year old and a 10 year old on the wrong flight - two separate incidences.

I've been on several AirJ flights where I sat right next to children traveling alone. For some reason, I ended up entertaining them but the staff did a okay job. My biggest issue would be customs and immigration which the flight staff will take care of.

My brother and I never had a problem here either. When I was still in grade school my brother and I would go to Jamaica three times a year Christmas, Easter and the entire summer. In the summer we always left either a week before school ended or a few days before and once we were handed over to the airjamaca agent that was it. She never left us and she sat with us on the flight. Sometimes it's a group of kids all traveling to Mobay, so it was fun. I can't believe the charge now, back in the day they didn't.

Once, I sat next a 5 year-old girl who was cute but talked my head off to BWI. But when it was time to eat or go to the bathroom...the staff took forever. I helped her with toys and food but refused to take her to the restroom because that is their job. I didn't want to be responsible for someone's child.

Islandwoman - you would not have those issues because he is older.

oh absolutely.....i know UA does and i would imagine other do as well......and if there is a delay we have a kids playroom with things to do for them to go to or they have the option of staying right with us at the gate or the counter......usually they want to go to the playroom and watch movies and stuff LOL.....but even there we have a UA rep "babysitting" them.....and if the person picking them up does not match the person listed to pick them up we do not allow the child to go with them....ONLY the person who is listed to pick them up may take them.......i usually put UM in first class if we have it available so they can fully enjoy their trip :) i do alot i should prolly be fired for but whatever!

O.k. so I guess I'm the only over protective mom on the board today... Look at my yardies just singling me out the only mom that wouldn’t let her child fly alone. It just scares me is all my baby in the airport all alone with dem strangers I just couldn’t do it...

When I took him to JA n Feb I was all with him I was about to make him hold my hand but I didn’t want to embarrass him in front of his god brother so I let him be.

I figured; but wanted to ask. Another time. I'm not going anywhere. You need to focus on getting better first.

TL; do what makes you feel comfortable. What does Jr say? Is he up to it or is he scared or excited about making the trip? Sometimes when I see the parents had the child off and they start bawling I start crying myself, cause I use to do the same thing when my parents handed my brother and I off. We were fine once we got on the plane.

Thanks for all the input ladies! My son and Jr are the same age - I think I would be okay with doing it for my son, but he has flown a couple times already so knows what is what. Jr doesn't want to do it by himself, but didn't tell his father that - just told Auntie. He would fly direct from Mobay to JFK and then we would just pick him up there, that way if there is any customs issues then can just walk out and get us.

Cara - I'm going to link you!!

And Lawns....I'm the bawler too...I would be terrible on the send off part.

i work for united and when we have a UM (unaccompanied minor) we (the airline) are responsible for them from check in to final destination......as a gate agent i take them from the counter to the gate and walk with them on board and inform the flight attendant and they are met by the next gate agent who then does the same......once they reach the final destination the gate agent takes them to their parents or person responsible fopr picking them up (for united we give that person a gate pass to go right to the gate and be there for when the flight lands)......i think alot of airlines would do the same procedure......if it is international we are with them thru immigration as well.....

Thanks Cara...

I know that's right. Think of the possible ramifications of someone saying you touched their child inappropriately in the restroom. I love kids and I am a regular softy for them...but in today's society you have to be extra careful.

Girl, I stil do that when I take my parents to the airport. In April, I was sitting on the floor near the security enterance with my legs and arms wrapped around my dad's feet crying. People were like awwwwwwww. My mother had already gone through the gate, cause she knows I'm crazy and how I get.
