Just curious what the average time to get a SSN is.

Did you tick the box on the DS-230 and wait, or did you go to the office yourself to apply for one? or both?

right now, its about a week it seems. hubby ticked the box, but had to go in, so don't bother waiting for it. since i've read that they usually come before the greencard, then the greencard shows up, i realized it wasn't coming on its own, so made a trip down on a tuesday, had it monday.

This is exactly the topic I was looking for. My husband's POE isn't till end of this month but wasn't sure if I should take him to the SS office next day. Is it too soon? Should I wait couple days, maybe a week? I am bit tight on time since we're planning a trip to Canada in August and need SS card and other stuff (ex. Driver License).

I already had one from attending school there...do you think I'll have the same number and just different wording on it?

Someone might know for sure, but I don't know if something happens in the "system" for them to know. When we went in, the lady didn't even look at the actual green card and just used his passport to do everything, and I said they were supposed to send one since we checked the box on the DS-230 and she looked and said that one wasn't issued yet, so she just took care of it. But that was less than a month after crossing, so it can be done fairly fast lol.

should be the same, they don't like changing numbers. plus the form asks if you had a number before and for the number

I did tick the box but didn't receive my SSN automatically, had to apply. And I had to make 2 visits to SS office. First I went around 10 days after arriving in US, lady said my case isn't in the system yet, I will need to wait. Then I went again after 3 weeks or so once I got my welcome letter. This time my case was in the system and the lady out there filled up forms for me, I received my SSN around 10 days later after filling.

So took around 6 weeks for me to receive my SSN. I would say wait for a week or so and then go to SS office.

We ticked the box for automatic generation of SSN, however after two weeks post-POE and no SSN in the mail, we decided to go into the Social Security office. Turns out that they hadn't even received my husband's info yet! So, we applied right there in person and got his card about five business days later. It looks beautiful :D Also, I was FINALLY able to legally change my last name, so I got my new SS card, too! (I'd been in India most of our marriage, so the name change process had to wait.)

8/24 POE

8/26 went to SSA, told to come back 10 days after POE

9/2 went back to SSA, found out SSN assigned automatically on 8/29

I would say wait a few days then head to the ss office and see if they have sent or will send one. We also ticked the box on the ds230 form but never received one. Had to go to the office and fill up form, it then took 2 weeks to receive. Don't risk getting 2 ssn's, search around it has happened. Goodluck.

  • 1 month later...

In fear of going in and them telling me it was too early and to go home and wait... I waited as long as I could stand it (35 days in the country) and still nothing in my mailbox! ...I went in to the local SS Office and I had not even been entered in thier system yet. I convinced the guy (after he had to go discuss the situation with his supervisor) to process me. He told me there is still a small chance I could end up with 2 SSN's but htey agreed to process anyway and that I should recieve it in 5-10 business days. I went in before the July 4th weekend and recieved my card in the mail 9 days later! That's pretty speedy with the holiday weekend in there!

My advice would be NOT to tick the box on the DS-230 and just do it yourself when you get to the USA!
