Question about imports and US customs.

Hi,

I know this isn't directly related to the matter of petitioning relatives. But I decided to try and post here since I believe this can best be answered by folks who have been through the US Customs and airports already.

During our time in Southeast Asia, we obtained old jewelry made from sea-shells, rocks and other beach materials. We would like to bring these with us on our flight to the US. But is it going to be an issue? Will we be fined for this, or worse? Has anyone ever attempted to bring such jewelry from Asia to the US? Note these are personal effects only. We don't intend to sell them.

I would check out the cbp site. I once brought a live lobster back from the US into Canada and found all the information I needed on the Canada Customs site. I believe you could also call them and ask your question directly.

Also check the customs rules for the country you are taking the jewelry out of. Most countries have rules against taking some things that can be considered cultural or historical artifacts. I doubt that jewelry made from sea shells and other flotsam is going to be classified as an artifact of significance unless it happens to be REALLY old, but you should check anyway.
