Hi all,

I am thinking way ahead here, but does anyone have a recommendation of a company that will ship household, small furniture, etc. by sea from Japan to the US? I have done some Google searches and found a few companies, but as these things always go, a personal recommendation says so much more than a website can.

Anyone done this before?

Regards,

Deryck

Friends of ours had 2 small children, furniture, piano, etc (basically enough stuff to fill half a container) so they used an international removalist service. We didn't have quite as many belongings and found it easier just to pack everything in boxes and send them via sea mail through Japan Post. I think we sent about 10 or 11 of the largest size JPost boxes. Price is calculated based on weight and the service is reliable and the boxes arrived within the given timeframe

I've got a quote from Economove Japan and Shipmates Worldwide Moving before.

I am not sure their services are good, but it was definitely cheaper than major companies like Kuroneko Yamato.

Reading posts in gaijinpot.com, those two seem to be good though.

We ended up using the Japan Post for two reasons.

1) Everything we ship fits in cardboard boxes.

2) We have to go pick up boxes from a port, that's 4 hours away from our place if we choose the moving company.

We could use their port-to-door service, but it was over our budget :-(

Thanks for the suggestions!

I will do some some research on the things mentioned. I guess it really depends if my fiancee wants to bring any of her furniture or not. Most everything else would be shippable using JPost or similar. It's still so early in the process that subject hasn't come up yet. :)
