"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

That should tick off all the people waiting to cross the border today. I was harrassed at the Cornwall border, once, going into the US. The guy didn't like the fact that I was born in England, even though I had naturalized. He wanted me to produce my SIN card and gave me heck when I told him I didn't carry it with me. Then he proceeded to go up one side of me and down the other about why I had the nerve not to carry one on my person at all times. What an a$$. Especially given the fact that the US SSO distinctly tells you NOT to carry their own SSN card with you. He probably got insulted when he threatened me saying I was obviously trying to sneak into the US so I could live there. I answered "Why would I want to do that?"

Anywho..... I don't blame the Mohawks for refusing to allow the firearms. It is their territory. Plus, I'm rather unnerved by the thought of armed guards at the border. Are all the other border stations armed? My friends are with the Mohawks - Tyendinaga territory, which is right by there. I should ask them about it.

I was under the impression that both sides are armed at all times. Drug smugglers? Convicted Criminals? Eh. What do i know.

Canada has STARTED to arm their POE guards, but its a long process from what I have read, not sure when it will be completed.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Guess they chose the wrong place to start.

Yeah. I guess you only pay attention to those kinds of things when you've got something to worry about.

I really don't understand the issue. The US side is armed and and now the Canadian side being armed becomes a problem for them? They seem to think the Canadian border agents will become trigger happy.

I know there was an elderly US couple recently killed at that Canadian crossing because they were rammed by someone on the run with a van full of cigs.

I dunno, but I think there are bigger fish to fry.

The issue is that the Canadian Border Services Agency want to arm their employees on land owned by the Mohawks. The Mohawks don't agree with this plan and the CBSA employees don't agree with the Mohawks.

So it's a pissing contest with the Mohawk?

Aye, there's the rub. Like Krikit says, it's MORE than that..it's DEEPER than that...we don't have pissing contests with our natives...we shouldn't..this is very serious to us as a nation and a combination of cultures.
