Hi all. I had lived in Japan for one year teaching English. I contacted the Japanese Embassy here in Vancouver to try to get a head start in obtaining a police certificate from Japan, but I was told that I was required to show official document asking for one, and when I do get one from the US consulate, it will take 2 months!! Has anyone from VJ requested a police certificate from Japan before? Thanks in advance.

I know you can download that request from the brazilian consulate, maybe you can check if your consulate has it for download, so you can go ahead and order yours now, since it will probably be way over 2 months until your interview.

Hi! I'm just writing to share my experience...

I did not need a police certificate from Japan but needed one from Singapore. I was in the same situation as you... I needed a to show that the US needed the certificate for a visa application. I sent them a copy of the checklist (which I got from the website) and sent it to them in November 2005. A couple of weeks later, they sent me a letter saying they needed an official letter with my case number and so on, and that I could just fax it to them.

When I finally got the letter from NVC (this is for CR-1) asking me to gather documents, I faxed that letter to Singapore. I asked that they work on it right away (which they did). They said it would take them two weeks (which it did). If you look at my signature you will notice that it took me forever to return the DS-230 to NVC. And that was because I had to wait for the police certificate.

Anyway, you can probably ask the Japanese embassy if they will accept your NOA1 or NOA2 and a copy of the checklist as proof that you need a police certificate. If not, then you may have to wait till you get Packet 3 from the consulate.

Do you know how long it would take them to process your request for a police certificate?

Hi Cygnet, thanks for sharing. To answer your question, they have told me it will take 2 months to process the request. Perhaps I will take you up on your tip with the checklist and NOA1 date, can't hurt to try. Thanks.
