Hello,

I just filed for my wife's N-400, however her non US passport she has been using all this time will expire in mid-July this year.

My question is should we renew her passport from her old country while we have N-400 in process even when we have no plans to travel outside the country during the processing of her N-400

I am hoping that during the N-400 interview she doesn't have to show a valid passport from her old country to be given US citizenship.

any help will be much appreciated.

thanks

we already have a valid US credentials like her permanent resident Card and a Driver's license.

I meant that during this process up until the naturalization is complete and at the point of interview does she need to provide a valid passport from her old country to be given US citizenship.

Plus also we plant to travel to CAnada for visiting some friends after her passport from the old country will expire. Will we be able to travel to Canada with only her green card.

thanks

To address both parts of your query:

Your wife will not need to have a currently valid passport from her home country for the citizenship process.

The requirements for US land border crossings have changed. Since 1st June, 2009, it is a requirement for all people entering the US, even at land borders with Canada and Mexico, to have a valid passport (or, an enhanced Drivers license only available to residents in some states).

If your wife renews her foreign passport, she can continue to use this and the green card to re-enter the US, throughout the N-400 process - until she had taken the oath. At this time, she becomes a US citizen, and legally must use a US passport to enter the US (even if her foreign passport is still valid). This means there is a period of time, between the oath ceremony and until her US passport is received, that she will not be able to leave the USA.
