Translations

I have my wife's police certicicates and birth certificate with me here in the states. All the instructions I read say "if the documents are in the language of the country applied in they don't need to be translated. When my wife picked up the K3 packet at the embassy in Costa Rica they said the marriage certificate does not need to be translated. That was if going for the K3. I have the translations for the marriage certificate as I needed them for the 130/129F petitions. I have the originals to go with the DS230.

We're going for the CR1 and I am putting together her DS-230 packet now so it will be ready when they request it. Can my brother or a friend of mine do the translations? Those documents are pretty streightforward and I can easily translate them but it may be questioned at the interview (I'm gonna try to go) when they relize that my spanish isn't perfect. I can get by fine and actually read it better then I hear it. Or should I just go ahead and do them?

If they need to be done by a "professional", any ideas on how to find one?

I translated everything into English EXCEPT the police records which CAN be in the language where the interview is at.

Anyone competent in the foreign language and English can do the translation. You do not need a professional.

From the USCIS website:

Please submit certified translations for all foreign language documents. The translator must certify that s/he is competent to translate and that the translation is accurate.

The certification format should include the certifier's name, signature, address, and date of certification. A suggested format is:

Certification by Translator

I [typed name], certify that I am fluent (conversant) in the English and ________ languages, and that the above/attached document is an accurate translation of the document attached entitled ______________________________.
