I was married in Egypt... do I need to register my marriage in my home state? Not sure how I would go about doing this, and I'm sure it varies state-to-state, but has anyone else done this?

Thanks,

Amy

I didn't register mine anywhere. I have a copy of my Arabic marriage contract and my translation. I have chosen not to change my name until after Tarek's interview.

Good to know! I have the translation too, I'm assuming that would work for any validation, but I was just thinking about how when you get married in the US, you have to turn in some form of documentation for it to be legal. :)

You don't have to register your marriage here in the US. As long as you have your marraige papers from the country you got married in, it is recognized. When I changed my name on my driver's license and my social security card, all I needed was my marriage license. My credit cards never asked for anything, they just changed my name over the phone.

I also wondered about this as well. Turns out that it's valid here in the U.S, but if I wanted to have another license through my state I could do that as well. Anyhow, we are happy with the one we have from Egypt since it was done Islamically as well.

:ot: Curious though...Besty, why did you chose to wait to change the name??

If you are married anywhere, the US recognizes any marriage that is recognized by the country in which it took place. If your marriage is recognized and legal where it was performed, you don't have to register it here. Your foreign marriage cert works. You cannot register your marriage or get a new license and marriage cert in the US to "re-marry" since you are already married.

It sure would be nice to be able to "register" marriage in the U.S.

I am tired of dealing with the ignorant people in administrative offices wherever I went to (change SS card, driver's licence, name on bank accounts...) when I show them our marriage certificate.

They are so scared that the certificate is fake I guess since it is foreign, that they make me wait for hours, and they keep staring at that piece of paper so confused.

For that reason alone I would like to have US issued marriage certificate or equivalent document...

A marriage license is a permit to marry. Married people don't need ANOTHER marriage license. Married is married.

For women who marry abroad, going to register the marriage with State authorities can simplify the name change process in some states though. Registering a marriage (in the USA) has nothing to do with obtaining a marriage license at all. See the first two sentences above.
