From what I've heard from my fellow American friends, if you're an American, you CANNOT have any other citizenship (no dual allowed) other than American. If you're Canadian, you can be dual.

If he wants to become Canadian, he'll be "surrendering" his American citizenship. I guess you can only be one or the other as an American citizen.

Hope that helps! :)

No - why would he be able to apply for Canadian citizenship without being a Cdn resident? Much the same as you couldn't just up and apply to be a US citizen without going through the immigration process.

And to correct the previous statement, Americans can have dual citizenship with Canada. Canada would recognize him as a citizen but the US wouldn't recognize his Canadian citizenship and would still view him as American - they same way they view Canadian dual citizens.

He needs to be residing in Canada to be able to become a permanent resident of Canada. If you wish to pursue that option, wait until you get American citizenship, then you can return to Canada and sponsor him to become a PR as your spouse.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

what kathryn said,lol

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Sorry for my 'confusing' statement!

I worked at CIBC and a lady came in who was American and married to a Canadian for over 15 years. Every couple of years she has to do paperwork she said to maintain her American citizenship but to also allow her to stay in Canada. I said "why not just become a dual citizen? That's what I'm going to do after 5 years." She said "I can't, I would have to surrender my American citizenship to become a Canadian citizen, so I remain a Canadian permanent resident."

Weird? Maybe she needs to do some VJ research! :)

She is really confused!

Oh and it wasn't always so, about Canada allowing dual - prior to 1977 it wasn't allowed.

 I think I'm going to do this, actually. It would be Sept. 2010 for me. Might as well, just in case I can convince Jared to move back :D

But yes-Americans can be dual.

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

Everyone here is well aware of my problems with the Canadian government.

I've noticed that the Canadian government is just as confused as the American government. For instance, I've gone back and forth with CIBC and Autoplan and each time I get contradicting information. Neither one knows what the other is doing and therefore, will say one thing while the other says something else.

Actually... that's how it's been for me with every section of the Canadian government so far. No one knows their a$$ from their elbow. Each department gives information that's either contradictory to another or just wrong.

Not really.

Oh and get this: Canada Post apparently came by earlier today. I wouldn't have known this, since they didn't bother to buzz our apartment. They simply left a notice on our mail slot (they couldn't open it up) telling us we need to pick it up at the nearest depot.

Fortunately for us, a Canadian Post depot is about five minutes away. However, the point is that they couldn't even be bothered to buzz us.

Are you SURE you were home ;)

Deadpool, governments suck everywhere. They are slow and inefficient. I have had the pleasure of working for both governments now and can tell you they are BOTH the same. (ie. inadequate and have antiquated policies) Bunch of dinosaurs working so what do you expect ? :D The private sector moves so much faster and people are so innovated. I have a lot of great ideas here for my department, but can't even speak up about them because it's either a money issue or that I'm going to be put in my place.

It's nice to know we're not alone. :hehe:

That happens to us all the time! They NEVER ring the doorbell. I guess they can't be bothered to get out of their truck. I wonder if it's because you're in an apartment, DP? I know they knocked on my mother's door to deliver her passport when I was there, but she's in a house.

Our postal carrier just drops stuff on the carport and runs. Never rings the bell. Same as UPS. Drives me crazy because my husband is home all day, and he never knows there's a package out there to pick up, and I nearly drive over it when I get home from work :P

divorced - April 2010 moved back to Ontario May 2010 and surrendered green card
