sorry not to make this a huge religious thread, but does that mean (according to those that believe dogs are not allowed in islam for pets) ... that if muslims who do have dogs in their home can not be blessed by God or can not have prayers answered bcz they live happily with dogs as pets??? Bcz I know several muslims that have dogs in their homes for pets and im pretty sure they are blessed in life. So Im just wondering about the people who believe otherwise, what is your belief about the muslims who have them

I, too, know Muslims that have dogs as well. Honestly, I am not a scholer in Islam. What I wrote was in reference to someone asking why some Egyptians don't like dogs and why dogs are considered taboo in many places in the Middle East. As for who is blessed or who isn't I cannot say because that is strictly for God to decide. I love all animals and so I have a hard time saying one is better or worse then another, but that is just my personal feelings.

The majority of Muslims (that I know) believe the saliva of dogs is impure. So if their saliva touches a Muslim's clothing, it must be washed... if it touches their hand, etc. then they have to make wudu or they will be in a state of impurity until they do. So if a dog was in the house, their saliva could be anywhere, making the house impure... and if it is impure then angels would not stay in the home, and it would make it difficult to pray since the house was impure everywhere the saliva might be... A dish that has been eaten out of by a dog must be washing 7 times before it can be used... one of those times has to be with sand (I think...)

This said, 100% of the "anti-dog" information comes from Hadith, not a word of it comes from the Quran. In fact the Quran states that food that is caught by dogs or falcon (when hunting) is lawful for eating... So what about the saliva in the dog's mouth when he carries the bird, or whatever he caught and brought back to the hunter??? Angels turned the sleeping men who had dogs with them in the story of the cave.. so I guess SOME angels aren't afraid of dogs..

Another Hadith tells the story of a Prostitute taking off her shoe and filling it with water to give to a dog who was dying of thirst... and the gist of it is that she will enter Heaven (her sins forgiven) for saving the dog...

My ex quit a job because the owner had a dog that he kept at the office... and H is always trying to dodge any dog we come across for fear the dog's nose will touch his clothing.. He also commented that most pets in the USA live better than many PEOPLE in Egypt... he was so shocked at how far "overboard" Americans will go for their pets... I was shocked to hear he had 12 cats in their flat in Egypt.. but when his sister got pregnant they just took all 12 to the fish market and dumped them to fend for themselves...

Unfortunately many Muslims also believe that it is forbidden to permanently change anything that God has created, so spay/neuter is out of the question...

What really upsets me in Egypt is the way the children mistreat animals, it borders on torture, and no one says a thing..... I think learning to care for pets and to treat all animals with mercy and kindness and compassion is very important for children. And there is NOTHING Islamic about mistreating ANY animal.. DOGS included! Guess they don't know the hadith about the woman who tortured a cat being condemned to hell fire...
