Now that we have arrangements made to get to the US and all is in order, I am again needing some quick advice. What is the next thing to do? She will need a SSN to get the Marriage Licence. So I can find that info in the guides, not too tough I'm sure, but some state doc's require a Birth Certificate

Naturally hers is in Viet, so Do I need to do something about that? Can I apply for her SSN now or do I have to wait until we get back there? Can we get married without the SSN? I feel lost again. I spent all of my time and energy focused on the interview. Now we new mountains to climb. Someone direct me please.

thanks,

Erik and Chinh

Congrats on getting your Visa.

The next step is to get everything you have in Vietnamese translatied into English. If you haven't left Vietnam, get everything translated over there at the place the Consulate recommends. You'll need her birth certificate translated in order to get a SSN. You can get that right away but be aware that you'll have to change it if you get it before you're married and update it once she gets her green card. The SSN you get before getting the green card states you'll need an EAD card for employment, you don't need the EAD once you get the green card. In fact the USCIS officer took Thi's at the interview.

You have to apply for the SSN in person and depending on where you live, the requirements are different. Your County Office of Records will outline what you need to get the marriage license. Los Angeles County doesn't require SSN but does require a photo ID.

Then you can start the AOS, EAD, Advance Parole process once you're married. You'll need to open a joint checking account, saving account as well as show joint bills like health insurance, gas, electric by the time of your AOS interview. The quides cover most of this. We just had our AOS interview and there's a detailed post about it in the AOS forum that may help too.

Good Luck!!

Peter and Thi

A SS# is not required to get your marriage license. We both needed our Birth Certificates, hers needed to be translated by an official registered translator, she also needed her passport and I-90.

Best of luck

In Texas we got our marriage certificate by using her passport and her entry card they put in her passport only and my drivers license only. No SSN number was needed at that time but do go down and apply for it right away anyway as it takes some time to get it. In Texas they do require 72 hours to wait till you can marry after receiving the certificate. Once married whoever does the ceremony will mail in the completed license to the registrar but I asked to just hand carry it over myself and got a copy right away that I could use to get the adjustment of status started right away or it can take a couple of weeks to receive it by the mail. Good luck on the journey.
