It is totally voluntary whether or not to get the AP. You don't have any travel plans now, however, what happens if there is a family emergency back home? The AP costs nothing additional to the AOS so why not apply? Think of it like insurance - you may never need it, but if you do you're glad you have it.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

hi VJ family, is the AP necessary if am not going to travel anytime soon? or is it a must to have AP?

thanks

It is optional, but free if you apply at the time of AOS. My opinion? Why not?

I'll third that sentiment and say it's free ONLY IF you apply for AP WITH the AOS package, so why not just fill out one extra piece of paper?

divorced - April 2010 moved back to Ontario May 2010 and surrendered green card

PLEASE DO NOT PRIVATE MESSAGE ME OR EMAIL ME. I HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT CURRENT US IMMIGRATION PROCEDURES!!!!!

It's free either at the time of filing or after you have received the NOA for the filing of the AOS:

NOTE: If you filed a Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status, as of July 30, 2007,no fee is required to also file a request for advance parole on Form I-131. You may file the I-131 concurrently with your I-485, or
you may submit the I-131 at a later date
. If you file Form I-131 separately, you must also submit a copy of your Form I-797C, Notice of Action, receipt as evidence of the filing of an I-485 as of July 30, 2007.

(from the instructions)

but that's a minor point, I agree with everybody, fill out the form in case there is an emergency, etc.

It is optional. It is also a simple one page form. It is also free when filing the AOS. Why not?

I'll go one step farther and say it's just stupid not to get it. It is the shortest of all the forms and insures you can leave hassle free for any crazy reason that may pop up.
