a cinematic acheivement in which the early life and rise of ghengis khan is depicted, this film is visually stunning, and holds the attention despite the russian voiceover on my copy that can't be turned off. no matter, the film's language is mongolian, which is not close enough to chinese for me to understand much of anyway.

kahn as a 10 year old boy sees his father die after being poisoned in a meeting with a rival clan. he is shortly thereafter taken slave by another clan, and escapes to study the arts of war with a personal agenda. from a little cub becomes the tiger.

filmed by a kazakhstan production company in western china, with stunning landscape, a killer soundscore, and an eye for historical detail if not accuracy, the film suffers by employing many chinese and japanese actors. the faces are just not the same. in this film i see a little of harbin and a little xian, but still mostly mongol. khan's young wife is true mongol, and a hotty even in traditional clothes. westerners think of mongols as mongoloids, but nothing could be farther from the truth. the young women are more like pretty chinese girls with a narrower nose.

but then, i like asian women. people call my wife Zhou Xun (joe-shin). they're about the same, except that zhou xun makes a lot of money, and li yang spends a lot of money.

i understand that mongols are not appreciative of this film, and cite historical inaccuracy as the reason. i'm more inclined to believe that they are angry that the film was made by kazakhs with russian money in china, and that the few available historical details have been fleshed out with high drama. for instance the scenes in which khan is wounded, his wife taken slave by enemies, then impregnated before being rescued. of course, khan smiles when he discovers she has taken a knife to "her baby daddy" during the raid. kind of hokey, and no basis in fact.

there is one really cool haircut in the movie, though. it's kind of like a really wide mohawk trimmed short. i'm thinking of having mine done that way after the guests from south africa leave next week.

speaking of mongol hotties, they are among the hottest on the globe. any man who chances to visit beijing without his wife needs to find time to stop by the "Mongolian Embassy", also know as Maggies Nightclub, sometime after 9pm.
